Cannuzzo between the Savio River Landscape and Poetry

Cannuzzo combines the landscape of the Savio with a remarkable cultural trail: the poet Tolmino Baldassari lived between Castiglione di Cervia and Cannuzzo, and the river was a source of inspiration for him for many years. Today, this connection can be discovered in different ways – by walking or cycling along the river, at the poetic benches in the park and by exploring the churches and the poet’s house.

River landscape and paths along the Savio

The Parco Fluviale di Cannuzzo was created through a project to restore and enhance the floodplains of the Savio River. It was designed as a recreational area and as a cycling link between the coast of Cervia and the hills of Cesena. The park therefore provides a clear focus for holiday days centred on activity and landscape.

All entrances to the Parco fluviale di Cannuzzo are located on Via Salara provinciale and are marked by explanatory stone totems. At an entrance near the Santuario della Madonna degli Angeli, visitors can park outside and continue on foot or by bicycle along a riverside path as far as Castiglione. The Savio foot and cycle path runs for approximately 7 km along the river embankment and leads through the surrounding landscape and the rural village of Castiglione. For a longer break, the park has a shaded rest area with tables, benches and barbecue facilities. Families can therefore choose between an active route and an extended break without structuring the day exclusively around a single attraction.

Poetry in the park and Baldassari’s legacy

The connection between landscape and literature is particularly vivid in the Parco Fluviale di Cannuzzo. There are six poetic benches featuring verses from poems by Tolmino Baldassari. The texts are presented in dialect and additionally in Italian. This adds a cultural encounter to time spent by the river, one that fits directly into its surroundings.

The currently active Associazione Tolmino Baldassari is based in the poet’s former house in Cannuzzo di Cervia. It is committed to making his life and work known and enhancing their appreciation. The Casa Museo di Tolmino Baldassari is located directly next to the Parco fluviale del Savio. Churches and historical details

The Santuario della Madonna degli Angeli is particularly known for a magnificent 16th-century fresco depicting the Virgin Mary surrounded by angels. At the same time, it is a typical 17th-century church with a Latin-cross floor plan, a single nave and two side chapels.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli in Cannuzzo di Cervia dates from the early 17th century. Its connection to Tolmino Baldassari has also been passed down: he described the church in one of his books.
