Bagnara Di Romagna: History and Special Discoveries

Bagnara di Romagna combines an exceptionally well-preserved historic townscape with museums, sacred art, vibrant traditions and nature-oriented experiences.

Historic Centre and Museums

The historic centre, enclosed by the town walls, is considered the only completely preserved medieval castrum in the Romagna plain. This history is particularly vividly brought to life at the Rocca di Bagnara. The medieval fortress was built in the 15th century by the Riario-Sforza family on the ruins of a medieval castrum erected in 1354. Since 2008, its upper floor has housed the Museo del Castello. The historical tour traces the history of Bagnara from the Bronze Age to the present day.

The Museo Pietro Mascagni also offers an unusual museum experience, with around 5,000 love letters written and personally signed by Pietro Mascagni. The Museo Storico Parrocchiale di Arte Sacra focuses on sacred furnishings and liturgical vestments from the 16th to the 19th century. Its special exhibits include a rare antiphonary and a gradual dated 1520.

The churches, too, tell the story of different eras. The Chiesa Arcipretale dei Santi Giovanni Battista e Andrea Apostolo has been documented in written records since 1484; the present building reflects three construction phases. In the Prato di Sant’Andrea, an early medieval motte has been preserved, surrounded by the depression of the original defensive ditch. Some areas of the park are left in a more natural state, allowing flowering plants to develop and providing a habitat for animals ranging from pollinating insects to small mammals.

Sacred Places, Art and Local Traditions

The Santuario della Beata Vergine del Soccorso was inaugurated on 20 November 1770, after the Imola-born architect Cosimo Morelli had been commissioned to design it in 1765. The church, also known as Chiesa dell’Ospedale or Chiesuola, now houses a parish auditorium used for lyrical concerts and theatre performances.

The town’s history also includes the Festa del Pubblico Voto. This tradition has existed in Bagnara di Romagna since 1631 and was established on 9 June 1631 as a solemn vow of thanksgiving to the Madonna “dei Camangi”. Another visible motif of local remembrance is the mural “Caterina: tigre di Romagna”. It depicts Caterina Sforza beside a tiger, with the Rocca Sforzesca visible in the background. Villa Morsiani, built in the 15th century, was fortified when it was constructed and served military and watchkeeping functions like the nearby Rocca Sforzesca, which was built at the same time.

The Popoli Pop Cult Festival includes concerts, educational workshops, activities for families, traditional cooking workshops, folk dancing and food stalls representing various cultural traditions. This makes it possible to combine cultural discoveries, shared hands-on experiences and culinary impressions. A farmers’ market is also held on Wednesday afternoons. Fruit, vegetables, dairy products, cured meats, jams, honey and eggs are sold there directly by the producers.
