Travo – Archaeology, History and Distinctive Landscapes
Accommodation in Travo
Travo combines a historic townscape with archaeological discoveries and a distinctive landscape. In the historic centre on the left bank of the river, medieval buildings and monuments preserve the history of the town. Added to these are Castello Anguissola, churches with Romanesque and artistically valuable features, and the Parco Archeologico del Villaggio Neolitico di Travo S. Andrea. Anyone planning a trip with varied interests can combine culture, landscape and tangible history in Travo.
Medieval Traces and Church Art
The restored Castello Anguissola houses the Museo Civico Archeologico. Particularly striking are the medieval Trilit windows, arranged in two facing rows. The archaeological museum opened in 1997 and is housed in Castello di Travo. Its main entrance is at Piazza Trieste 16 in Travo (PC), providing a specific reference point for planning a cultural stay.
The collection comprises materials from research at 175 archaeological sites in the Val Trebbia. It ranges from the Palaeolithic to the Roman period, thus offering a broad chronological view of the valley’s past. It is also worth exploring the Chiesa di Sant'Antonino: built around the middle of the 11th century, it preserves traces of the original Romanesque structure in the single-lancet windows and in the exterior design of the central nave wall.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Travo is also one of the cultural points of interest in the surrounding area. It houses frescoes of significant historical and artistic value and is located a few steps from the town, near the hamlet of Sant’Andrea. A holiday apartment in Travo can therefore be particularly appealing if you would like to place historic buildings and the museum at the centre of your travel plans without limiting yourself to a single excursion destination.
Pietra Perduca and the Neolithic Village
In the area around Travo, Pietra Perduca stands out as an ophiolitic rock formation against the surrounding clay landscape. It rises in the valley of the Torrente Dorbida and creates a striking contrast in the landscape. Its rock pools are home to a colony of three newt species: the great crested newt, smooth newt and Alpine newt. The Oratorio di Sant’Anna dominates this rock formation; together with the fortress, it first appears in documents in 1143.
The Parco Archeologico del Villaggio Neolitico di Travo S. Andrea offers another perspective on the past. The Neolithic Village includes well-preserved residential and functional structures, some of which remain visible for direct viewing. Since 2010, life-size reconstructions of Neolithic buildings have been on display in the park. Information panels along the visitor route explain the history of the site, the residential and functional structures, and the Italian and local Neolithic periods.
The themed activities in the park recreate ancient techniques, including firing ceramic vessels, working flint, weaving and preparing food. Every year in the first half of June, the park also stages the historical re-enactment “Preistorica”. An archaeological excavation campaign takes place near Travo every July, with students and enthusiasts from across Europe taking part. Such dates may be relevant to travel planning if you would like to shape your stay around history, archaeology or special events.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Plans
Travo is a suitable base for a trip in which more than one theme matters. The town centre represents medieval architecture and churches, the museum covers the long period from the Stone Age to Roman times, while Pietra Perduca and the Neolithic Village offer other ways to explore the landscape and the past. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house, you can therefore first decide whether you mainly want to plan cultural discoveries in the town, archaeological activities or excursions in the surrounding area.
