Ponte Dell'olio lies between the Nure River and the Riglio stream. The landscape thus combines waterways, rolling hills and signposted trails with a remarkable density of historic buildings. Those looking for a holiday apartment for their stay can combine different interests here: industrial history, medieval architecture, mountain bike tours, and regional wine and culinary culture.

Historic Places with Their Own Character

One particularly unusual testimony to the area's history is the Fornaci di Ponte dell’Olio complex. It was built from 1890 onwards for the continuous production of building lime for the Calce Val Nure company. The complex, which has been owned by the municipality for more than a decade, now houses the three surviving kilns. The construction method is also revealing: exterior stone walls, metal reinforcing rings, an insulating layer of sand and interior walls made of refractory bricks were all part of the structure. This means that the focus is not only on its former use, but also on its technical construction.

Castello di Riva offers a different perspective on history. It was first mentioned in 1199, while the present building dates from 1277. The approximately isosceles triangular ground plan, the square keep and a loggia between the keep and a northern tower give the complex a clearly recognisable architectural order. The Chiesa di San Giacomo was rebuilt in 1272 and adds a religious dimension to the historical perspective.

Castello di Folignano also stands out when exploring the region's cultural history. Its square ground plan is defined by four round towers at the corners. The complex is part of the Fattorie Didattiche project of the Emilia-Romagna region and has a laboratory as well as a tasting and learning room. Those wishing to combine cultural discoveries with regional themes will find various points of interest here, without having to limit themselves to just one type of excursion.

Mountain Bike Routes and Hilly Landscapes

At 677 metres, Monte Santo is the highest point in the hilly landscape of Ponte dell’Olio. For active days, the municipality offers three mountain bike routes with downloadable maps and GPS tracks. The routes are marked with signs and arrows. Each sign displays the route name, distance, difficulty level, duration, a route plan and the location of the sign in question. This information helps you prepare a tour based on the specifically indicated features, rather than planning solely according to a general impression of the landscape.

A network of trails described as the largest outdoor sports area, with 560 kilometres of signposted routes, also starts in Ponte dell’Olio. The trails run through Ponte dell’Olio, Bettola, Farini and Ferriere and can be used on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. This allows you to shape your stay according to your preferred pace and mode of transport. The area is also part of the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli Piacentini route. Those who include regional wines and specialities as a travel theme alongside outdoor activities can incorporate this affiliation into their plans.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

When choosing a holiday apartment in Ponte Dell'olio, it is worth deciding on your main focus at an early stage. Culture enthusiasts can focus on the historic sites associated with lime kilns, castles and the church. For a more active stay, the signposted mountain bike routes and the extensive trail network provide useful orientation. If landscapes and regional specialities are more important to you, combine the hilly landscape around Monte Santo with the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli Piacentini.
