Discover Sorbolo: Culture, Sports and Parma Morta
Accommodation in Sorbolo
Sorbolo combines impressive cultural heritage with sports, regional cuisine and a special connection to nature. Those planning a trip with different focuses will find opportunities here for cultural discoveries, active days and observations in the surrounding area. When choosing a holiday apartment in Sorbolo, the preferred mix of activities can therefore be decisive: Should the trip focus primarily on history and art, or are exercise, regional specialities and nature the priorities?
Organ, Church and Art in Sorbolo
A noteworthy detail of the town’s history is the organ in the parish church. It was completed in 1836; the first instalment had already been paid to organ builder Giovanni Cavalletti in 1834. The instrument has 17 stops. Restoration of the Sorbolo organ began in August 2008 and was completed on 15 September 2009. The instrument was restored to its original appearance in the process.
The Church of the Martyrs Faustino and Giovita also bears witness to several construction phases. Its present appearance is the result of reconstruction after the earthquakes of 1831 and 1832, as well as subsequent consolidation and restoration work following the severe earthquake of 15 July 1971. Remains of the original Pieve di San Faustino can be seen beneath the presbytery and along the side aisles. This ancient pieve dates back to the 11th century.
Art enthusiasts can see significant plaster works by sculptor Luigi Froni in the town hall’s council chamber. His widow, Renata Fornelli Froni, donated the works to the municipality of Sorbolo. The Centro Civico Culturale di Sorbolo, the former Casa Pezzani, also houses a significant bronze work by Luigi Froni depicting actor Memo Benassi.
Casa Pezzani and a Diverse Local Character
Casa Pezzani was restored while preserving the existing building fabric and floor areas. Multi-purpose rooms and a public park were created in the building. The Biblioteca Comunale Momo is located in one of the oldest rural buildings in the Bassa Parmense, dating from 1700. In Sorbolo, historic architecture, public cultural venues and different forms of artistic expression can thus be experienced together.
Sports, Regional Cuisine and Nature
The Centro sportivo di Sorbolo has athletics tracks, football pitches, facilities for hockey and roller skating, indoor sports halls and two tennis courts. Activities listed there include athletics, gymnastics, football, roller skating, basketball, volleyball and tennis. This opens up various possibilities when planning a trip: one day can be devoted to sport, while on another day the town’s cultural history or regional specialities can take centre stage.
The Food Valley Bike reaches Sorbolo. In this context, pasta made from local products such as wheat, tomatoes and Parmigiano Reggiano is mentioned for tasting. Alongside art and exercise, this also gives the trip a culinary dimension.
In the wider surroundings of Sorbolo lies Parma Morta, a wetland approximately 5 kilometres long established in the former bed of the Torrente Parma. The area is an important reference point for waterfowl. Fifteen bird species listed in Annex I of Directive 79/409 and 56 regularly migrating bird species not listed in this annex have been recorded there. For nature enthusiasts, Parma Morta therefore complements the town’s cultural and sporting facets with an opportunity for birdwatching.
