Sasso combines impressive landscapes with a multifaceted culture of remembrance. The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta di Sasso stands on a rocky outcrop and offers views over the Val Termina di Castione. At the same time, trails begin here that bring culture, history and outdoor activity together. If you are planning a trip in which sightseeing and hiking are given equal importance, Sasso offers several specific points of interest for this.

The Pieve di Sasso and the View over the Val Termina

The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta di Sasso is a prominent starting point for getting your bearings in the area. Its location on the rocky outcrop directs the view towards the Val Termina di Castione. You can reach the Pieve via the Strada Provinciale 17 and the Strada Magrignano. From there, hiking and cycling routes lead to the summit of Monte Fuso. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the church with an active route, without having to consider the historical and scenic aspects of the area separately.

Remembrance Culture at the Museo Storico della Resistenza

Another focal point is the Museo Storico della Resistenza di Sasso. The first core of today’s museum was established in 1973. On display are memorabilia and a series of videos documenting important moments of the partisan war in the mountains. The museum thus gives Sasso a historical dimension that extends beyond the individual attraction. Those interested in the history of the war of liberation against the Nazi fascists can combine a visit to the museum with the trails and memorial sites on Monte Fuso.

The Sentiero resistente: History as a Trail

The Sentiero resistente consists of three sections and forms a 20 km circular route. It connects the Museo della Resistenza with the Centro faunistico del Monte Fuso, passes through Rusino and returns to Sasso. As a trail divided into stages, it reaches, connects and recounts the stories of 11 sites associated with the war of liberation against the Nazi fascists in the valleys of Monte Fuso in the Parma Apennines.

At each of these sites, you can download the GPX track of the trail by scanning a QR code and listen to selected audio contributions. Along the route from the Museo della Resistenza di Sasso to the Centro Faunistico Monte Fuso, the village of La Pietra is also home to a memorial commemorating one of the victims of the raid of 1 July 1944. The trail therefore opens up not only a route but also individual historical sites, each with its own significance.

Further Trails for Different Travel Plans

The Via delle Pievi is recommended for travelling on foot or by mountain bike. It runs through the municipalities of Traversetolo and Neviano degli Arduini and, over a 20 km straight-line distance, touches the four parish churches of Traversetolo, Bazzano, Sasso and Scurano. At around 35 km, the Sentiero di Arduino covers a considerably greater distance and connects the Pieve di Sasso in the municipality of Neviano degli Arduini with Castello di Canossa. La Rupe di Sasso in Neviano degli Arduini is also mentioned as another viewpoint.

Sasso as a Base for Your Accommodation

When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday house, you can consider which of these themes should shape your trip. Sasso is suitable for a plan that brings together a visit to the Pieve, the Museo Storico della Resistenza and trails with a historical connection. If, on the other hand, you are mainly looking for a longer route connecting different places, you can factor the Sentiero di Arduino or the Via delle Pievi into your decision.

For further travel ideas, you can also explore Collecchio, Calestano, Fontanellato, Bardi, Albareto, Torrechiara, Sissa and Salsomaggiore Terme.
