San Polo combines local history with a nature experience in the surrounding area. In the town, the Monumento ai Caduti and the Chiesa di San Paolo represent different historical themes; the Riserva naturale Torrile e Trecasali adds wetlands and birdwatching. When choosing a holiday apartment, this raises a practical question: should your trip focus mainly on places of remembrance and church history, or also include time in the nature reserve?

A monument to the fallen of both world wars

The Monumento ai Caduti stands in front of the town hall on a brick plinth with three stone steps. It is dedicated to the fallen of both world wars. Its central sculpture consists of four interconnected wings of victory in white marble and long steel swords. The swords have bronze hilts and point downwards. It is believed to have been erected in 1935; its design features Art Deco elements. Its dedication, form and materials make the monument a striking landmark in the town’s history.

Church history and art at the Chiesa di San Paolo

The Chiesa di San Paolo was originally a chapel of the nuns of S. Paolo. The first record of it dates from 1005. Lightning damaged the church in 1840, and it was restored in 1843. The upper part of the gabled façade, with round arches and pilasters of the Romanesque type, has been preserved. The interior also offers several points of historical interest: the church contains furnishings and paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. A remodelled 17th-century altarpiece includes a painting from the second half of that century depicting the fall of Saint Paul. Building history, preserved façade elements and sacred art thus stand alongside one another as distinct aspects.

A place of remembrance and a festival at Parco Attilio Gombia

The small town park Parco Attilio Gombia is located in San Polo di Torrile. A marble monument there commemorates five people who were killed on 25 April 1945 during a German reprisal. The park also hosted an event: the second edition of the Sun Polo Gombia Park Fest took place here from 22 to 24 May 2026. The programme for this edition included live music, street food, a market, children’s games and wellness activities. The date clearly identifies the festival as a past edition and does not imply anything about future dates.

Birdwatching at the Riserva naturale Torrile e Trecasali

The Riserva naturale Torrile e Trecasali, with its wetland ecosystem, lies nearby. More than 300 bird species have been observed there over several years. The nature reserve is easy to explore and open to everyone. Paths made of compacted earth and stone dust lead to seven observation hides. The visitor centre includes a conference room, classrooms, a wooden pavilion and educational panels. The combination of wetlands and observation hides offers a different focus from the monuments and church history in the town.

Which interests suit your trip?

Those mainly interested in local history will find in San Polo a monument to the fallen, a church with several historical and artistic connections, and a place of remembrance in the park. Those wishing to include birdwatching and wetland landscapes can make the nearby reserve a focus of their trip. Choose a holiday apartment based on which of these interests will shape your trip most; if you plan to visit the nature reserve, take current seasonal arrangements into account.
