Cedogno: Fortified House, Church and Views of the Enza
Accommodation in Cedogno
Cedogno brings together the history of a fortified house dating from the 15th century, a church with a coffered ceiling and expansive views of the River Enza. Historic architectural features and the landscape lend the village its distinctive character. If you enjoy looking out for architectural details and are also seeking a destination with views of the river and castles, you will find plenty here to explore on your trip.
A fortified house rich in detail
The Casa torre dei Rossi retains the original structure of a fortified house dating from the 15th century. Loopholes and a crossbow loophole on the side facing the Piazza make its defensive character visible in specific architectural features. The position of the crossbow loophole also connects this detail to the village centre.
The building has four levels: the ground floor was once used for storage and is covered by a stone barrel vault, while the attic is designed as a dovecote. A barrel vault is a long, curved ceiling; the term helps explain the shape of the former storage room. These levels make it possible to identify not only the house’s defensive character, but also its different architectural features and former uses.
Church and portal in the village centre
The church of Cedogno is the only church in the surrounding area with a coffered ceiling. The term describes a ceiling divided into individual panels and helps identify this architectural feature without specialist knowledge. In 1564, the church became a parish church under the name Santa Maria Assunta. This historic date adds a second, historical dimension to the church.
The portal of Cedogno is also rich in detail. It is made of finely worked sandstone and features zigzag decoration. The round arch rests on two corbels, or projecting supporting elements. Above it, a pointed keystone stands out; carved on it is a sun with the Christogram at its centre. The portal thus brings together distinct features in its material, ornament, arch shape and imagery.
The portal is on the opposite side of the street from the Casa torre dei Rossi and faces a private courtyard bordering the Piazza in the village centre.
River views, castles and getting here
Cedogno offers expansive views of the course of the River Enza. From a viewpoint in the village, the castles of Rossena and Canossa can also be seen on the horizon. This brings two different kinds of view together: the broad sweep of the river and two individual historic buildings on the horizon. The course of the Enza forms a sweeping line across the landscape, while the castles can be made out as distinct landmarks.
Cedogno can be reached via a narrow municipal road—a practical detail to consider when planning your journey.
The traditional Festa delle Rane in Cedogno was held for its 27th and 29th editions.
