Forlì-Cesena combines medieval castles and fortresses with landscapes of vineyards and olive groves. Culture and history

At the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Sarsina, the predominantly local archaeological finds date from prehistoric times to late antiquity. A particular focus is the Roman period from the 1st century BC to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The museum also displays reassembled Roman funerary monuments, including the 13.5-metre-high pedimented mausoleum of Rufus, which was built towards the end of the 1st century BC. The renovated museum reopened to the public after extensive refurbishment.

In Dovadola, the Rocca dei Conti Guidi is an important example of medieval military architecture. The lines of its 14th-century wall structures have largely been preserved unchanged. In Terra del Sole, the city fortifications extend for more than 2 km and preserve the character of the fortress town. The Roman past is also still visible: near Galeata, parts of the baths and the small theatre in the Roman city of Mevaniola are open to visitors. The Villa di Teodorico in Galeata is considered an important testament to the history, culture and identity of the region.

Cesena combines religious and military heritage. The Abbazia di Santa Maria del Monte is an old Benedictine monastery on Colle Spaziano; the adjoining Basilica of Santa Maria del Monte is a diocesan Marian shrine. The abbey welcomes visitors for the celebration of the Assumption of Mary as well as on 31 May to mark the end of the month of Mary. In Cesena, there is also a tour along the inner ramparts, the old prisons and an exhibition of tournament weapons.

Predappio reveals further historical layers: there, a year-round, signposted walking tour leads to significant, almost unchanged examples of architecture from the Fascist era. In Forlì, a collection brings together 70 paintings on the common theme of work; it includes works by important Italian art movements from the mid-20th century.

Nature and activities

The Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona e Campigna covers areas in the province of Forlì-Cesena as well as in the provinces of Arezzo and Florence. It extends over approximately 36,000 hectares, divided equally between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. The approximately 600 km of paths offer opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding, as well as ski touring and snowshoeing in winter. The park has nine Sentieri Natura. In Campigna, there is also the universally accessible „Sentiero per tutti… i sensi“.

The natural area also includes Monte Fumaiolo, a protected mountain landscape offering opportunities for trekking, mountain biking, climbing, horse riding and winter sports. Near the Cascata dell’Acquacheta, there is a waterfall approximately 70 m high.

Routes and cycling

The official Via Romea Germanica branches into several sections near Forlì and Cesena. From Forlì, it leads through the Bidente Valley via Meldola, Civitella di Romagna, Galeata and Santa Sofia to Campigna. For cyclists, the Rubicone Tour Bike is a cycling circuit through the province of Forlì-Cesena that connects historical, cultural and scenic attractions and is suitable for all ability levels.

Cesenatico is considered a centre of cycling tourism thanks to its specialised facilities and numerous related services. The Nove Colli, a cycling gran fondo in Cesenatico, also takes place there. The Food and Wine Route of Forlì-Cesena was expanded to include eleven mountain municipalities and has since covered 534 km.
