Discover Malalbergo: Canals, Landscape and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Malalbergo
Malalbergo combines historic waterways, rural landscapes and Emilian food culture. The town is suitable for a trip in which you would like to combine culture, nature and regional traditions. Depending on your interests, you can explore historic buildings, take a cycling tour between Malalbergo, Pegola and Altedo, or coordinate your travel dates with one of the food festivals.
Waterways and Historic Traces
Malalbergo’s history is closely linked to the Canale Navile. In 1292, the Navile between Pegola and Malalbergo was completely rebuilt. This created a connection in Malalbergo between the upper waterway, with the Canal Morto, and the lower waterway. As a result, Bologna and Ferrara were connected by water. For the historic journey from Ponte Poledrano, today’s Bentivoglio, to Ferrara, the plan was to use the Navile as far as Malalbergo and then continue through the Valli to Torre della Fossa.
A prominent witness to this past is the Palazzo della Dogana, also known as Gabella Grossa. The building was erected in 1583 between the Canale Navile and the Canale Morto as the headquarters of the captaincy responsible for navigation in the “Porto di Malalbergo”. At the same time, it served as a customs post between the Papal States and the Duchy of Este. In later centuries, the Palazzo was the seat of the Napoleonic gendarmerie and the National Guard; it is still known by the name “Il Casermone”.
Art, Archaeology and Regional Festivals
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is also part of the area’s cultural heritage. Despite numerous restorations, it has preserved its external architectural lines. The church houses the “Pala dell'Altare Maggiore”, a 16th-century canvas attributed to the Bolognese painter Prospero Fontana (Bologna 1512–there 1597). It depicts the birth of John the Baptist. Those interested in older art and regional church history will find a specific point of interest here.
Near Altedo, archaeological remains of a rural Roman building from the 1st or 2nd century AD were discovered. This was the first find of its kind in the municipality of Malalbergo. When planning a trip around different interests, this historical aspect can be combined well with the municipality’s more recent traditions.
At the end of May each year, the Sagra dell’Asparago Verde di Altedo IGP takes place in the district of Altedo. Between the end of August and the beginning of September, Malalbergo also hosts the Sagra dell’Ortica. At this food festival, Emilian culinary tradition is reinterpreted with nettles. Offerings include a traditional food stall serving first and second courses based on nettles. The two festivals have different seasonal focuses and may play a role in choosing when to travel.
Landscape between the Valli and the Canale Navile
Malalbergo lies between the Canale della Botte and the River Reno. Northeast of the main town is Valle La Comune, the oldest of six Valli in the municipality. The area covers 90 hectares. Small marshes of varying depths alternate there with reed beds and dry strips of land. These are home to poplars, willows, elms and English oaks, among other trees.
For active exploration, a 14-kilometre cycle path connects Malalbergo with the districts of Pegola and Altedo. The route passes through a landscape shaped by asparagus cultivation and follows the Canale Navile along part of its course. This creates a clear choice for your daily itinerary: you can combine historic sites and culinary themes with a cycling tour through the landscape without having to infer a specific travel time or level of difficulty.
When planning your visit, note that the Oasi Valle la Comune is privately owned and accessible only by prior arrangement with the owners. This regulation should be taken into account if you would like to visit the landscape specifically.
Getting There and Choosing Your Holiday Destination
From Bologna, Malalbergo can be reached via Strada Statale 64, the Porrettana. Those travelling from Bologna via the A13 should take the Altedo exit and then continue on the municipal road to S.S. 64 Porrettana. Follow this road northwards to Malalbergo. Bus route 356 also connects Bologna, Altedo, Malalbergo and Ferrara.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider what you want your trip to focus on: the history of water engineering and historic buildings, regional festivals, landscape or the 14-kilometre cycle connection. For families with different interests, this selection offers various ways to organise the days without trying to fit every experience into a single programme.
