Quarto offers different ways to explore its history and landscape: an ancient burial site, a rest and service station, a historic road route and a visible lava dome. A municipal park is also one of its notable features. You can therefore shape your stay around different interests, rather than associating Quarto with just one attraction.

Archaeological Sites and Their History

The Fescina necropolis is located on Via Brindisi. This burial complex includes the pointed columbarium known as Fescina. The necropolis was used from the Augustan period until the end of the 1st century AD. The time span and the columbarium’s distinctive shape give this site a clearly recognisable historical profile.

The Mansio Romana on Via Mercadante also dates to the 1st century AD. It served as an ancient rest and service station on the route connecting Rome and Puteoli. Its layout is clearly structured: the building was constructed on two floors, each with four interconnected rooms. Its function and architecture can be considered together here.

Another archaeological trace is the villa on what is now Via Cimarosa. It developed on the edge of the ancient route of the Via Campana and covered an area of 500 m². The Church of San Nicola is one of the surviving buildings of Castro di Serra. It is the best-preserved of them; it is the only building that still has a roof.

Historic Routes and Landscape

The Via Consolare reached the Quarto basin through the artificial cutting of Montagna Spaccata and crossed it for almost three miles. The dimensions of the cutting make the landscape feature easy to picture: at the top, it is 78 metres wide and 50 metres high. This brings the historic transport route and the scale of the artificial cutting into direct relation.

Geology is also part of the surrounding landscape. A lava dome is visible in the locality of “Punta Marmolite”, northeast of the Piana di Quarto. The Parco Urbano Comunale di Quarto offers a different kind of open space: it covers 12,000 m², of which 9,000 m² are green spaces and flower beds. The lava dome and the park offer different points of interest—one is a geological formation, the other a municipal green space with specific measurements.

Highlights for Your Trip

If you are planning a family trip, you can start by considering which themes best match your shared interests: the necropolis and the Mansio, the historic road route, or the combination of geology and urban greenery. These differences offer a practical guide when choosing a holiday rental in Quarto and deciding what to focus on during your stay, without assuming any particular accommodation features.

The Circumflegrea runs from Napoli Montesanto in the direction of Torregaveta, stopping at Quarto, Quarto Centro and Quarto Officina stations. Transport services and stopping patterns can change, so check the current timetable before travelling. Casa Mehari is accessible only during certain events and is mainly reserved for activities run by organisations and associations. If you plan to visit, check the relevant event dates.
