Naples displays its history not only in individual buildings, but also in the city layout and along the coast. In the Historic Centre of Naples, the rectangular grid of the ancient Greek foundation of Neapolis remains recognisable. Along the seafront, the historic centre preserves Roman archaeological remains. The heritage also includes ancient fortresses and royal complexes, including the Royal Palace from 1600.

Culture

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli houses, among other things, the Magna Grecia, Farnese, gems, mosaics and Villa dei papiri di Ercolano collections. Guided tours can be booked there by visitors. The Collezione Farnese forms the founding core of the Museo di Capodimonte and occupies the eastern wing of the palace's piano nobile. Another prominent institution is the Teatro San Carlo: it was built in 1737 and remains the world's oldest active opera house.

The history beneath the city also extends across different periods. Napoli Sotterranea includes air-raid shelters used during the Second World War. Nature and water

By the sea, the protected Parco Sommerso di Gaiola brings together several perspectives on the landscape. Historical and archaeological remains are visible underwater; clear water and seabeds bearing traces of history attract snorkellers.

A path in the Parco Archeologico del Pausilypon leads through Mediterranean vegetation to a viewpoint over the islets of Gaiola and the Scoglio di Virgilio. Spiaggia di Miseno, a beach, is located in the vicinity of Napoli. The Giardini del Molosiglio and Parco di Villa Floridiana, a park, are nearby. Napoli Aquatica, a zoo, is located in the wider regional area around Napoli.

Getting around Napoli

The official Decumano Superiore route runs from the Museo Archeologico Nazionale to Parco Re Ladislao.
