Discover Sessa Aurunca: Ancient History, Sacred Architecture and Trails
Accommodation in Sessa Aurunca
Sessa Aurunca combines Roman remains, medieval sacred architecture and a landscape where old paths lead through chestnut woods to the Mura Megalitiche. Anyone planning a trip featuring culture, nature and distinctive local stories will find a variety of experiences for individual outings. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you mainly want to explore historic interiors and museums or also spend time on a hiking trail.
Archaeology between the Theatre, Museum and Criptoportico
A good starting point for exploring the history of the town is the Museo archeologico nazionale di Sessa Aurunca. It is housed in the ducal castle and includes, among other things, a 3D reconstruction of the Roman Theatre. This representation helps visitors understand the spatial form of the building. The actual Roman Theatre has been temporarily closed to the public since 17 November 2025 due to restoration and enhancement work. This information is important for travel planning, while the museum offers an independent opportunity to engage with the theatre.
The ancient heritage also includes the Criptoportico near the Roman Theatre. The complex has three arms and vaulted galleries. Graffiti bearing the names of poets and verses by Virgil suggest that it may have been used as a school. At the same time, the Criptoportico was probably a public building dating from the Sullan or late Sullan period. This cautious historical classification makes the site particularly interesting for visitors who want not only to look at a building but also to consider its possible function.
Cathedral, Chiesa dell'Annunziata and MuDiSe
The Cathedral of Sessa Aurunca was built in the 12th century using spolia from the Roman Theatre. It is an example of Romanesque-Cassinese architecture and preserves a mosaic floor in Opus alexandrinum as well as a valuable 13th-century ambo. It therefore represents a form of sacred architecture in which older Roman elements are combined with medieval design.
The Chiesa dell'Annunziata also tells the social history of the town. Around 1489, it was commissioned by the guild of tanners and shoemakers together with an adjoining hospital and educational institution. Sebastiano Conca's Annunciation is displayed above the wooden choir stalls in the presbytery. In the MuDiSe, the Grande Sala displays objects from the Catacomba di San Casto, including detached and restored wall frescoes. Archaeological finds from sites in the diocesan area are also on display, including statues, sculptures and ceramics. The Catacombe di San Casto were opened to visitors after a lengthy restoration and research campaign.
Landscape and trails around Sessa Aurunca
Monte Ofelio shapes the landscape as the dome-shaped volcanic cone of the Roccamonfina volcanic system. The route “Da Cescheto alle Mura Megalitiche” offers a different perspective on the surroundings. It leads through chestnut woods to the ancient Mura Megalitiche and passes through the municipalities of Sessa Aurunca and Roccamonfina. When planning a day with children or a mixed travel group, it may be useful to alternate between a cultural visit and time in nature rather than trying to fit all the impressions into a single programme.
Another historic destination is Ponte Ronaco, a bridge with 21 arches dating from the Trajanic period. It partly retains its Roman paving made of basalt blocks. It thus complements the museums and sacred buildings with a structure where the area's historic infrastructure can be read.
Traditions and suitable travel planning
Holy Week in Sessa Aurunca includes processions, Carraciuni and other rites in which the entire community takes part. During Lent and the Processione dei Misteri, the Miserere is performed by three singers. Those interested in religious traditions and local forms of expression can take this period into particular account when planning their trip. Outside this thematic focus, the museum, cathedral, ancient buildings and the trail to the megalithic walls offer various ways to shape the content of a stay.
A holiday apartment in Sessa Aurunca is therefore particularly suitable for a trip where you want to set the daily rhythm between culture and landscape yourself. What matters less is a uniform holiday programme than the choice of outings: the museum and MuDiSe focus attention on collections and reconstructions, the cathedral and Chiesa dell'Annunziata on sacred art and history, while Monte Ofelio, the chestnut woods and the Mura Megalitiche show another side of the area.
