Piedimonte Matese: Samnites, Churches and the Matese
Accommodation in Piedimonte Matese
Samnite walls, a museum in a monastery complex and churches featuring art from several centuries give Piedimonte Matese a layered history. There is also a watercourse from Lago Matese to Piedimonte Matese and the Sentiero Italia in the Matese area. This creates an appealing contrast as you plan your trip: you can focus on cultural history or turn your attention more towards the Matese landscape.
Samnite traces and the Museo Mucirama
The megalithic walls on Monte Cila enclosed and bounded the area of the ancient Samnite city of Alife. At the Museo Mucirama, the archaeological exhibition “Gens fortissima Italiae: i sanniti nel territorio di Piedimonte Matese” explores the Samnites in the Piedimonte Matese area. It includes a wide selection of finds, most of which were unearthed during excavations on Monte Cila. Monte Cila thus features both in the account of the ancient walls and as the source of many of the museum's finds.
The Museo Mucirama is housed in a distinguished Dominican monastery complex founded at the foot of the San Giovanni district in the final years of the 14th century. The museum is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 1 pm, and additionally on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 5 pm. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Churches, Palazzo Ducale and local history
The religious buildings can also be distinguished by the periods in which they were built. The Church of San Tommaso d'Aquino, also known as San Domenico, was built at the end of the 14th century on the site of a Roman temple. The Baroque Church of San Salvatore houses the rare Madonna della Neve, a 13th-century sculpture. San Biagio preserves valuable 15th-century frescoes. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as San Marcellino, is, by contrast, an 18th-century church. Together, these examples span a Roman temple site, medieval works of art and a later church.
The Palazzo Ducale adds to this historical picture: it was built around the 11th century, probably on the same site as an earlier Norman fortification with three towers. Once the work was completed, the Palazzo became a gathering place for leading figures in culture and music. The Villa Comunale tells local history in its own way, too. It began as the private garden of the Egg family; its bas-reliefs recount important parts of the story of G.G. Egg and the Piedimonte Matese cotton mill.
Watercourse and routes in the Matese
Water offers another perspective on the landscape: what flows from Lago Matese through the Scennerato gorge, caves and underground passages reaches Piedimonte Matese through the Gola del Torano and emerges abundantly in the “Sorgente” area. You can trace its course from the lake through the underground passages and gorge to where the water emerges.
In the Matese area covered by the Piedimonte Matese section of the CAI, the Sentiero Italia runs for more than 40 kilometres through the municipalities of Gioia Sannitica, San Potito Sannitico, Piedimonte Matese, Castello del Matese and San Gregorio Matese. The route passes through some of the Matese's most distinctive and impressive places. Another travel route is the railway line that descends from the Matese to Naples and is considered one of Italy's most scenic. If you plan to use this connection, check the latest service information beforehand.
Choose the right focus for your holiday
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: would you mainly like to explore Samnite history and church art, or give equal time to the watercourse and the Matese route? This comparison makes choosing a location more straightforward. Piedimonte Matese is a good fit for your plans if the combination of cultural history and landscape would enrich your holiday.
