Faicchio: Culture, History and Culinary Delights
Accommodation in Faicchio
Faicchio combines impressive architectural heritage, sacred art, historic paths and regional culinary delights. Those who choose a holiday apartment in Faicchio can get to know the town from different perspectives: with the Castello Ducale as a prominent historic landmark, with churches full of art-historical details, with traces of Samnite and Roman history, and with events in August and September.
Castello Ducale and Faicchio’s Early History
The Castello Ducale was built in the 12th century at the initiative of the Sanframondo counts. Its trapezoidal layout and the three surviving cylindrical towers at the corners—there were originally four—make the complex a particularly vivid example of medieval military architecture. For families who enjoy discovering historical details together on holiday, this site offers a tangible introduction to the history of Faicchio.
Earlier periods are also present. The underground Acquedotto Romano di Fontanavecchia dates from around the 3rd century BC. On Monte Acero, the megalithic Oscan-Samnite walls date from the 6th century BC. The Arce di Monte Acero was a Samnite fortress used to observe enemies. The Ponte Fabio Massimo facilitated connections between Monte Acero and Monte Monaco. In this way, Faicchio’s different historical themes can be explored side by side without limiting the town’s history to a single era.
Churches with Distinctive Artistic and Architectural Forms
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was built in the Baroque style, has marble altars and houses sacred artworks, including frescoes and statues. Above the portal of the Chiesa di S. Maria di Costantinopoli is an aedicule containing the remains of a fresco dating from before 1688. Two frescoes depicting the Last Supper and the Washing of the Feet are located in a chapel on its right-hand side.
The Chiesa di San Rocco was built after a plague epidemic in the 17th century. Its single-nave interior is vaulted by an elliptical dome with four oculi. The Chiesa di Santa Lucia has six frescoes depicting the Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, as well as a choir with inlaid wooden stalls. The complex of the Chiesa della B. V. Maria del Carmelo was built by the Carmelites in the 17th century. In 1898, it became the novitiate and motherhouse of the newly established order of the Suore degli Angeli. The mortal remains of Suor Serafina are kept there; she was beatified at a solemn ceremony in Faicchio on 28 May 2011.
Historic Paths, Places of Remembrance and Special Dates
Frescoes are still visible today in the Grotta di San Michele. Around 700, the Lombards used the grotto for the cult of the Archangel Michael. Another way to explore the town’s history is via the completely paved Via Crucis. It begins in Faicchio’s historic centre on Via D.A. Palmieri and leads to the Convento di San Pasquale. On 15 October 1943, the Cappella di San Francesco was the scene of a massacre committed by the National Socialists, in which four young men and a local farmer were killed. This site is therefore also part of a responsible engagement with the history of the 20th century.
In August, the Medievalia event includes the Palio delle Contrade and celebrations in honour of the patron saint San Giovanni Battista. In September, the Sagra Enogastronomica takes place in Faicchio. The festival includes the Fontana delle tre botti, from which wine bubbles forth. The DOC wine Falanghina del Sannio is also produced in Faicchio. If you would like to combine culture and local traditions with culinary discoveries, these dates and products can play an important role in your travel planning.
