San Martino Sannita brings together sacred art and historic buildings with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The churches showcase architecture, frescoes and religious traditions, while Cucciano adds a distinctive settlement pattern. Colle dell’Angelo and the Benevento plain offer further reasons to visit, combining cultural history and landscapes.

Churches and religious history

The Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo has a rectangular nave and a polygonal apse. The nave is rectangular, while the apse has a many-sided end. Inside, a canopy topped by a statue of Saint Martin on horseback stands above the original marble altar. The church’s architectural form and a specific image at the altar are thus brought together. The municipal access page, last updated on 13 January 2025, states that admission is free; check the current conditions before visiting.

In Cucciano, the Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli Pietro e Paolo is adorned with frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries. The church is thought to date to the 13th century, based on individual documentary records. This should be distinguished from the history of the cult of the Madonna del Rosario, which certainly dates back to 1600. The two dates therefore refer to different things: the tentative dating applies to the church, while 1600 marks the history of the cult. The Madonna del Rosario is celebrated in Cucciano every year on the first Sunday in October; check the local programme if you are planning a trip around the festival.

Cucciano and the historic palazzi

Cucciano is considered the oldest and most distinctive village in the municipality of San Martino Sannita and has Samnite origins. The settlement consists of seven groups of scattered houses on hilltops or along the road. This layout shapes the village: the groups of houses are located not only on hilltops but also along the road. Alongside its religious history, Cucciano thus offers a concrete glimpse of the varied arrangement of its settlement areas.

Palazzo Bosco Lucarelli in the historic centre of San Martino Sannita preserves an ancient millstone and an oil mill. Bartolomeo Lucarelli, a patrician from Aversa, had the Palazzo Baronale built and moved there with his family at the end of the 16th century. The palazzo contains an ancient oil mill powered by millstones; check the arrangements for visits before going. The millstones and oil mill add a connection to local craftsmanship to the town’s history, alongside its churches and frescoes.

Views and hiking

From the built-up area of San Martino Sannita, views extend to the Calore Valley and the Benevento plain. Colle dell’Angelo also offers a sweeping panorama across the plain. Both descriptions share the Benevento plain as their focal point; the view from the built-up area additionally takes in the Calore Valley. At Lentace, the green slopes of Colle dell’Angelo run parallel to the Torrente Grande valley. The views across the plain and the slopes running parallel to the valley thus present distinct landscape features.

For the Le Surte hiking route from San Martino Sannita, a CAI programme dated 12 January 2025 lists 300 metres of elevation gain, a duration of five hours and a difficulty rating of E. The duration given in the programme provides a concrete basis for planning the day; also take the E rating into account when choosing the route. Any future organised outings should be checked separately.
