Santa Domenica combines a striking stretch of coastline with experiences in nature and an unusually rich cultural history. The Capo Vaticano visitor area also includes the Museo Antropologico e Paleontologico in Santa Domenica. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Santa Domenica, you can therefore tailor your stay to different interests: a beach with special access routes, marine nature, or archaeological and historical discoveries.
Holiday apartment in Santa Domenica between beach and nature
Spiaggia la Scalea can be reached by sea, via a hiking trail through the Mediterranean maquis, or by a nearby staircase from the town. The beach lies at the foot of a sandstone cliff approximately 70 metres high. In front of Spiaggia la Scalea, the turquoise seabed is rich in marine flora and fauna. When choosing your holiday apartment or other accommodation, it is therefore particularly relevant whether you want to experience Santa Domenica as a base for days at the beach, nature observation or a combination of both.
The Baia di Formicoli also complements this landscape. A few metres from the beach, Posidonia oceanica forms an extensive seagrass meadow; this aquatic plant is endemic to the Mediterranean. The Fiumara della Ruffa offers a different experience of nature. It can be reached from Brivadi via old paths or a steep, uneven mule track. An old hydroelectric power station, built around 1929/1930, stands along the Fiumara. The access route described makes this place particularly interesting for travellers who, in addition to the coast, are looking for historical traces in a dynamic landscape.
Archaeology, Museums and Coastal History
The Museo Archeologico e Paleontologico is housed in the “Fazzari” Palace in Santa Domenica. Its palaeontological section displays fossil remains of marine and land animals. The archaeological tour begins in two prehistoric halls featuring reconstructions of two burials. On the upper floor, Greek finds from the 6th to the 3rd century BC from the Torre S. Maria archaeological site in Ricadi are displayed. The exhibition also includes Roman amphorae from the Baia di Santa Maria; in Roman times, they were used to transport food.
The history of the town also reaches back to prehistoric times and the early Christian period. A prehistoric necropolis with typical dome-shaped tombs carved into sandstone was discovered in Santa Domenica. Remains of early Christian necropolises are also visible. Torre Marino was built in the early 1800s by the nobleman Marino Tranfo, who came from Tropea, on the site of a “stazione cavallara” dating from the 16th century. Horses and riders were stationed there to relay warnings to settlements not reached by the coastal towers. In this coastal area, Torre Ruffa is considered the only surviving coastal tower of this type.
In Capo Vaticano, the Museo del Mare is located in a former observation post of the Italian Navy, which served as a day beacon until the mid-20th century. The museum displays equipment used for fishing and navigation, including lamps, harpoons, fishing nets, anchors and oars. Another historical site lies at the end of the valley of the Baia di Formicoli: a small church dedicated to the Virgin and martyr Santa Domenica stands there. It was rebuilt next to the town in 1962, on the site where the ruins of a church and monastery had stood until 1600.
