Holiday apartment in Mileto: Culture, Landscapes and the Cammino del Normanno
Mileto combines a multifaceted history with a landscape where olive groves, valleys, and ancient waterways follow one another. At its heart is the Parco Archeologico Medievale di Mileto Antica. It is the first medieval archaeological park in Calabria and protects a historic cultural landscape covering approximately 40 hectares. This makes it a destination where archaeological, ecclesiastical-historical, and landscape interests can be explored side by side.
Archaeology and landscapes around Mileto Antica
The Parco Archeologico Medievale di Mileto Antica is located on Strada Provinciale No. 10, which connects Mileto with the Mileto exit of the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway. Its position along this road places the park geographically between Mileto and the motorway exit. This road connection helps you incorporate the archaeological site into your regional day-trip planning. On the park’s eastern hill stand the remains of the Abbazia della Santissima Trinità, founded by Ruggero I.
Museum, cathedral, and sacred art
The collection at the Museo Statale di Mileto spans the period from the late Roman Empire to the 19th century. It includes Roman finds as well as medieval furnishings from the former Benedictine abbey of SS. Trinità and the old cathedral. These include fragments of polychrome stained-glass windows and Norman capitals from the 11th and 12th centuries.
The museum also presents documentation from the 14th century. This includes the remains of monumental sarcophagi belonging to Ruggero Sanseverino and Giovanna d’Aquino, as well as other works attributed to the “Maestro di Mileto”.
The Cattedrale di Maria SS. Assunta e S. Nicola is a church built in the 11th century in the Romanesque-Norman style. After being destroyed twice by earthquakes, it was rebuilt. In the historic centre, the Santuario di Santa Maria della Cattolica preserves a life-size wooden statue of the Madonna and Child dating from 1700. The cathedral exemplifies Romanesque-Norman church architecture, while the Santuario preserves the life-size wooden statue from 1700.
Routes, pilgrimage connections, and excursion planning
The 141 km-long Cammino del Normanno connects the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, crosses the Serre mountains, and comprises eight stages. On the way to Mileto, the pilgrimage and hiking trail reaches the town that is known for its important role at the time as a Norman capital. On the Cammino del Normanno, 141 kilometres and eight stages provide a clear framework for your own hike between the Ionian Sea, the Serre, and the Tyrrhenian Sea. In Paravati, the Villa della Gioia–Cittadella di Maria can be reached by train via Mileto station. Alongside the town’s history, this places a long-distance route and another spiritually oriented destination within the same thematic context.
