Springs, gorges and a distinctive local character

Agnana Calabra combines an unusual local history with striking natural features. The town was established around 1343 near a monastery of Basilian monks located on Monte Sant’Agnana. To the southwest, the Fiumara Novito touches and borders the territory of Agnana. Its riverbed is home to a diverse range of plants and rocks, especially limestone and granite. Historical traces and geological impressions therefore shape the character of the town equally.

Mineral springs and nature experiences

In the Junchi area, the mineral springs include one sulfur spring, two chloride springs and one iron-rich sulfur spring. The sulfur- and chloride-rich springs of Agnana are also incorporated into a nature trail that crosses the entire area from north to south. In summer, the gorges formed by erosion on Monte Schiavo can be traversed; they illustrate the geological development of the area. The saline-iodine thermal baths include two medieval basins made of fired bricks, where visitors can immerse themselves.

Churches and annual festivals

The local culture includes the Church of San Basilio, which was rebuilt in 1907 after being destroyed again by the hurricane of January 23, 1885. Access is through the main entrance at Via Umberto I, SNC. The Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia is also accessible through its main entrance at Via Umberto I, 76. The festival of San Basilio Magno takes place in Agnana Calabra every year on June 14. On August 18, the Madonna della Misericordia is celebrated with a procession, fireworks and the traditional Cavalluccio dance. During the festivals, stalls sell local sweets.

Mining history between mills and railways

Agnana still has a number of derelict mills and oil mills; the Saitte in particular remain intact. Near Vallone Luria, remains of an anthracotherium were found, an animal believed to have lived around 30 million years ago. The coal from Agnana is also connected with Italian railway history: the first train on the Napoli-Portici line was powered by lignite from Agnana. Anthracite coal extracted from Agnana’s mines was used in 1882 to build the Roma-Frascati railway line. The mining park includes several mine entrances; some are considered visitable, while others have been bricked up.
