Holiday apartment in Mormanno: Lake, culture and regional traditions

Mormanno combines mountain landscapes, a culture of remembrance, lively festival traditions and regional specialities. The particularly appealing combination of nature and history can be experienced concretely in several very different places.

Lake, landscape and cycle path

Lago di Mormanno is a small artificial lake in the Pantano area within the municipality of Mormanno. It is located in the mountain landscape of Pollino National Park, is 780 metres long and 200 metres wide, and was created using the water of the Battendiero River as a reservoir for a hydroelectric power plant.

At Lago di Mormanno, a 1,500-metre-long cycle path connects the Pantano and Vallera districts. The 1,500-metre route between Pantano and Vallera gives the excursion a clear structure without treating the lake merely as a scenic backdrop. Lago di Mormanno is also home to significant bird species. Migratory birds include the cormorant and the black-winged stilt, while the grey heron and mallard are resident birds.

Another viewpoint is Montagnella. It is a public viewpoint and is protected as a site of landscape value. The Torretta panoramic area, on the other hand, is characterised by the Faro Votivo, which is visible from every corner of Mormanno. Both places direct the view towards the landscape and provide the town with distinctive points of reference.

Culture and history in Mormanno

The oldest of the three successive religious buildings of Chiesa Santa Maria del Colle is said to date back to the 14th century. The Faro Votivo houses mementoes and memories associated with eleven recipients of the Italian Gold Medal for Military Valour.

MormArt – Museo del Tempo is a permanent exhibition in which the past and present are brought together along a journey of remembrance and the preservation of cultural heritage. The Rievocazione della Donazione del 1101 also brings a historical event to the stage: it reenacts the donation of the Castrum of Miromanum, together with its associated lands and rights, in 1101.

Festivals and regional specialities

The Rievocazione della Donazione del 1101 includes a Sagra popolare dei Quartieri, where typical regional dishes are offered. Perciavutti also includes the Palio delle Botti, a skill and speed race. In it, four town districts push a large barrel for approximately one kilometre along Mormanno’s main street.

A local speciality is Bocconotto di Mormanno. It is available in oval, round or basket-shaped form. Its shortcrust pastry contains a filling that can vary depending on taste, the confectioners’ creativity and consumer preferences.
