Holiday apartment in Soveria Mannelli: Culture, Mountains and Trails

Churches, art and places of remembrance
The parish church of San Giovanni Battista houses an altar made of polychrome marble, originating from the nearby Abbey of Santa Maria di Corazzo and attributed to pupils of Cosimo Fanzago. The church was declared a national monument in 1910. In Via dei Vespri, the Fontana dei Francesi is regarded as the place where the anti-French uprising began in March 1806.
In the district of San Tommaso, construction of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo began in the final years of the 17th century, and it became a parish church in the second half of the 18th century. It houses a carved and painted wooden statue of Saint Michael. Its base bears the inscription “fecit Franciscus Picano 1723”; the statue probably once adorned one of the side chapels of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Corazzo. The Church of Madonna degli Abbandonati in the parish district of Soveria Mannelli was built around 1890 and rebuilt in 1987.
Lanificio Leo was founded in 1873 and is considered Calabria’s oldest textile factory. The historical performance “I Vespri Soveritani” reenacts the events from 22 to 25 March 1806 that triggered the popular uprisings in Calabria against the French occupiers.
Hiking and annual events
The “Sentiero delle Storie” is an approximately 13-kilometre circular trail that surrounds Soveria Mannelli, with almost 300 metres of elevation gain and reaching an altitude of nearly 1,000 metres. Each stage offers a story or an encounter with local figures and legends. The “Concorso Teatrale Città di Soveria Mannelli” has been held since 1980 and takes place in August. The Feast of Madonna degli Abbandonati is celebrated on the last Sunday in July with a novena, a procession and secular festivities; a large fair takes place on the two preceding days.
