Coast, Promenade and Calabrian Experiences

Soverato Marina, also known simply as Soverato, offers white sandy beaches as well as crystal-clear, deep waters. The 3 km-long seafront promenade is lined with equipped beach clubs, restaurants, bars, green spaces, and gardens with palm trees and oleanders. Here, coast, paths, nature, culture and Calabrian seafood cuisine come together to create a varied stay.

Sea and Paths by the Water

Off the coast, the seabed drops steeply; just a few metres from the shore, fish and marine flora can be observed while snorkelling and diving. The “Baia di Soverato” Regional Marine Park was established by Regional Law No. 10/2008 and includes part of the coastal area within the municipality of Soverato.

The Lungomare Giovanni Paolo II features wide pedestrian paths, green spaces and areas for relaxation; the promenade is suitable for walking, jogging and outdoor activities.

From the Coastal Path into the Landscape

The Kalabria Coast to Coast Trail begins at Lungomare Europa in Soverato. It first follows an entirely car-free seafront promenade northwards for around 2 km, then continues along the beach to Lido Tamada Beach. This 55 km-long nature trail begins on the Ionian beaches of the Costa degli Aranci in Soverato and leads through the Preserre Calabre mountain area via Petrizzi, San Vito sullo Ionio and Monterosso Calabro to Pizzo on the Costa degli Dei. Along the way, it crosses olive groves, vineyards, grain fields, chestnut and beech forests, as well as the natural area around Lago Angitola.

The Santicelli Botanical Garden is home to Mediterranean flora and offers panoramic views over the Gulf of Squillace; today, it is used for walks and events. The MUDIMAR Museo Didattico del Mare organises workshops, film screenings, excursions and guided tours. Educational and leisure activities there introduce young people to the biodiversity and habitats of the Calabrian sea.

Culture among Churches, Towers and Events

The Chiesa del Rosario dates from the 17th century and has a neo-Gothic façade. Corso Umberto is a venue for cultural and social events. In the area around Soverato Marina, the ruins of Soverato Vecchio are a destination for excursions. In Soverato Superiore, particularly at Largo Cardillo, cultural events and concerts take place.

In the area around Soverato Marina, the Chiesa di Maria Santissima Addolorata in Soverato Superiore houses a Pietà and a small museum with artworks and sacred objects. Also in the area, the marble group Pietà del Gagini was created by Antonello Gagini in 1521; it depicts Mary holding Christ, who has been taken down from the cross, in her arms. The Torre Antica was built as a watchtower together with further defensive structures against Saracen raids; it is also known as Torre di Carlo V and is considered one of Soverato’s landmarks. In the surrounding area, Castello di Poliporto was built in the 18th century to protect maritime trade.

Fish Festival, Sunrise and Local History

The Sagra del Pesce has reached its sixth edition and renews a fish festival tradition that has existed for decades; it offers an opportunity to rediscover authentic flavours of Calabrian seafood cuisine. Alba a Soverato has reached its ninth edition, combines sport, nature and culture, and includes a walk of around 2 km at sunrise. Swimming activities in Soverato have been documented since 1881; from the 1960s onwards, the beaches saw intensive use. Il Beltrame is a small stream in the surrounding area that is associated with the echo of very ancient poetry.
