Holiday apartment in Platania – nature, culture and local festivals

Platania combines experiences in nature with a religiously influenced culture. Monte Reventino, sacred buildings, the path to Cascata della Tiglia and longstanding traditions offer a variety of ways to spend your holiday. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Platania, you can choose the location according to your preferred experiences and your own holiday rhythm.

Monte Reventino natural area

Monte Reventino is the western continuation of Sila Piccola. River gorges and waterfalls shape the area, which is home to deciduous and coniferous forests. Cascata della Tiglia offers a natural setting with flowing water, a river breeze, green mosses and smoothly polished rock. This gives your stay a distinct focus on the landscape.

An easy path to Cascata della Tiglia

A simple, 1 km-long path that can be walked on foot leads to Cascata della Tiglia. It begins at the historic hamlet of Panetti on the Torrente Piazza and follows the stream to the waterfall. The walking time is 45 minutes, the elevation gain is 138 m and the difficulty level is easy. Monte Reventino cannot be reached by public transport, but by car via the SP 159/1. It is approximately 20 minutes or 8 km from the centre of Platania.

Churches and religious history

The parish of San Michele Arcangelo was founded in 1706 by Bishop Monsignor Nicola Cyrillo. The Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo has three naves and a Latin-cross floor plan. Its frescoes on the dome of the central nave and on the small dome of the right side nave date from the first two decades of the 19th century. The Chiesa dell'Immacolata is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The rural church Chiesa Madonna del Riposo is located in the Petrania vecchia–Cuvoli area, was restored in the 1980s and is believed to have been the first place of worship in the municipality of Platania.

Festivals with religious and civic aspects

The patron saint festival Festa Patronale San Michele Arcangelo is celebrated every year on 29 September and combines religious ceremonies with civic festivities. After the procession in the afternoon, it continues with market stalls, music and festivities in the streets of Platania. The traditional liturgical celebration Madonna del Riposo takes place every year on 8 September; during the procession, old religious songs are sung in the local dialect. These dates provide a clear cultural focus for planning your trip.

Natural history discoveries in the museum

The Museo di Micologia e Scienze Naturali displays hundreds of mushroom specimens faithfully reproduced by experienced artisans. There are also exhibits from the fields of mineralogy, botany and herbalism. The museum is divided into the departments of mycology, botany, mineralogy and zoology; the collection also includes stuffed specimens of local and regional wildlife.

The right base for your plans

When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Platania, the mix you want is particularly important: nature, walking, sacred architecture, festival dates or the museum. Base your choice of location on which of these experiences you want to define your stay.
