Sant'Angelo Le Fratte combines an impressive local history with murals, church art, wine traditions and striking landscapes. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for their trip can bring together a range of interests here: historical discoveries in the centre, culinary impressions in the rock cellars and nature experiences by the river, mountain and forest.

Historic Centre with Castle, Murals and Crafts

A good introduction to the town's history is the baronial castle. It was built in 1593 on the remains of a late Byzantine predecessor site. In its courtyard stands an oval tower with an elliptical ground plan, one of the few surviving and visible examples of its kind in Europe. This gives the castle an unusual detail for anyone whose trip is focused not only on façades but also on historical architectural forms.

The historic centre is also characterised by around 150 murals. Many of these wall paintings depict local traditions, especially winemaking. This picture is complemented by the craft tradition “La lavorazione del rame”, represented by craft businesses in the historic centre. Sculptures distributed throughout the town further enhance the views of Sant'Angelo Le Fratte. Palazzo Galasso, a building complex dating from the early 19th century, houses the “Michele Antonio Saverio Cancro” Civic Art Gallery.

Religious buildings also tell of the region's past. Santa Maria ad Nives served as the cathedral for almost 400 years, from the 15th century until 1818, during the temporary establishment of the seat of the Diocese of Satriano. In the Chiesa dell’Annunziata, the modernised bell tower preserves three historic bells. Inside are an expressive Pietà group of statues and other works of the Neapolitan school. Outside the town, in the village of Santa Maria Fellana, Villa Giacchetti also preserves an 18th-century fresco cycle with Rococo decoration.

Rock Cellars and Lucanian Specialities

A special culinary side can be experienced at “Le Cantine Aperte di Sant’Angelo Le Fratte”. In August, more than 100 cellars provide the setting for the food and wine tour. Visitors can explore the cellars and taste typical local dishes and products. The cellars carved into the rock are joined together to form a single connected route. The tastings focus on wine, cheese, cured meats, as well as other typical products and dishes of Lucanian cuisine.

For your trip planning, the annual patron saint's festival “Il rito di San Michele Arcangelo” is also a specific date to note: it takes place on 29 September.

Mountain, River and Nature Experiences

The rugged Carpineto mountain dominates the valley of the Melandro River and gives the landscape a distinctive profile. Bosco di Montepiano is part of the European Union's Natura 2000 network. It is designated as a Site of Community Importance because of its flora and as a Special Protection Area because of its wildlife. Falcons, buzzards, herons and black storks can be observed along the banks of the Torrente Fiumara.

For a more active excursion, there is the Lucania Outdoor Park in Loc. Acqua Furr. The forest adventure park includes an acrobatic course among the trees with platforms, walkways, Tibetan bridges and rope nets. There are also steel cables suspended up to 20 m high. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between art and local history, culinary discoveries, and a stay with a stronger focus on nature and activities.
