Latronico combines impressive natural landscapes, archaeology and thermal traditions. The municipality is located in the Pollino National Park; thermal springs rise in the village of Calda. This makes it an ideal destination for a trip that combines experiences in nature, cultural history and regional highlights.

Nature between Monte Alpi and I Calanchi

Monte Alpi is home to Italy’s northernmost population of laurel pines. Around 1,000 specimens grow there at elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 metres above sea level. The mountain is also a destination for active exploration: MTB guides from Pro Loco Latronico accompany visitors as they discover Monte Alpi by mountain bike.

Malboschetto, Latronico’s municipal forest covering around 700 hectares, is also part of the landscape. I Calanchi have a completely different character. These landforms were created by erosion and the runoff of clay-rich soils. Their appearance is shaped by sharp, fan-like ridges and narrow, steep gullies. From I Calanchi, there are views of the Pollino massif, the Monti di Lauria, Colle dei Greci and a large part of the Sinni Valley.

For families, this makes it possible to plan each day around different interests: a nature-focused itinerary can include Monte Alpi, the municipal forest or I Calanchi, while another day can be devoted to local history and the museums.

Archaeology and Local History

The Museo Civico Archeologico preserves finds from the caves of Calda dating from 8000 BC to 1300 BC. The same museum also displays finds from the Enotrian necropolis of Colle dei Greci dating from the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The five caves of Calda contain speleothems such as stalactites and stalagmites, as well as archaeological material dating from 8000 BC to 1300 BC.

The Parco Archeologico Colle dei Greci appears to have been settled between the 7th and 5th centuries BC by small groups of Enotrian origin. Those interested in the development of human settlements and the region’s prehistory will therefore find several different points of interest in Latronico.

The history of thermal bathing can also be explored at the Museo del Termalismo. It is housed in the historic thermal facility built in 1928 and comprises eight sections covering thermal treatments and spa traditions, local crafts, traditional foods, rituals and festivals, as well as emigration. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina complements this perspective with 780 objects. These relate, among other things, to traditional crafts such as the work of carpenters, blacksmiths and shoemakers, the cultivation of grapes and grain, the bedroom and transport.

Sacred Buildings as Further Points of Interest

Latronico’s cultural heritage also includes the Basilica Pontificia Minore di Sant’Egidio Abate and the Chiesa di San Nicola. The basilica has an interior with three naves separated by six columns with Doric capitals. The Chiesa di San Nicola dates from the 12th century and houses the oil painting Madonna della Pietà by Simone Oliva, created in the 18th century and restored in 1852.
