Discover Genzano Di Lucania
Accommodation in Genzano Di Lucania
Genzano Di Lucania combines a distinctive townscape with evidence from several centuries and a lively rural tradition. The historic center lies on a rocky spur surrounded by ravines on three sides. At the same time, the town is divided into two clearly distinct settlement areas: the higher-lying new district and the historic center. Those wishing to combine culture, landscape and traditional everyday history can choose the right holiday apartment or holiday home according to which of these aspects should be the focus of the trip.
Between the rocky spur, ravines and springs
A particularly vivid place for experiencing the landscape is the Chiesa e Monastero di S. Maria Annunziata complex. It is located in the oldest part of Genzano di Lucania, on a promontory surrounded by three deep ravines, and offers panoramic views of the ancient Fonte di Capo d'Acqua and Monte Vulture. Abundant, clear and very fresh spring water emerges from the foothills of the Fonti di Capo d'Acqua. A park was also created near the Fonti as a place for relaxation and outdoor leisure. Near the springs, a simple chapel was built in 1954 close to the site where a sacred image was found.
These different landscape impressions make it possible to make a clear travel decision: you can focus on the historic town structure, or plan excursions to the springs and the surrounding area.
Churches, gates and special works of art
The Fontana Cavallina was built between 1865 and 1893 in a fully neoclassical style. It bears a statue of the goddess Ceres, whom the inhabitants of Genzano call “Sand’Abbunnanza.” The statue of Ceres is an archaeological find dating from the period between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. The fountain therefore combines a 19th-century structure with a considerably older archaeological artifact.
The Porta di Sant'Antonio, an old gate from the 17th century, is also an important point of orientation in the historic center. The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Platea houses a polyptych from the Aragonese period attributed to the Venetian school. A wooden statue of the Madonna in Byzantine style from the 18th century can also be viewed there. The Chiesa dell'Annunziata was built in the 16th to 17th centuries; its portal dates from the first half of the 16th century. The church is connected to the Poor Clare monastery founded by Aquilina Sancia in 1321.
Other churches also add to the cultural and historical character of the town. The Chiesa del Sacro Cuore is a remodeled and reduced version of a former Franciscan monastery founded in 1630. It houses three 18th-century paintings signed D. G. depicting Saints Agatha, Lucy and Apollonia, as well as two panels from the 14th to 15th centuries depicting Saint Anthony and Saint Clare. The Chiesa di Maria SS.ma delle Grazie in Genzano di Lucania was elevated to the status of a Marian shrine on October 7, 2013. The Chiesa del Carmine is located on the main street of the old town and is connected to the premises of the former monastery of the Discalced Carmelites.
Rural tradition as part of the town’s character
Genzano di Lucania is shaped by agriculture and practices intensive wheat cultivation. The old crafts of the rural tradition are part of the intangible cultural heritage of Genzano di Lucania. These traditional techniques and crafts relate to the entire area, with a particular focus on the historic center. Traditional activities included, among other things, kneading bread and preparing related products by housewives.
The Museo della tradizione contadina at the agricultural and environmental institute of Genzano di Lucania displays objects associated with local rural folklore. For travelers who want to learn not only about churches and historic buildings but also about everyday life behind the town’s history, this focus is an independent addition. It also makes choosing accommodation in Genzano Di Lucania appealing for longer stays, during which different themes can be combined at a relaxed pace.
