Lido Di Scanzano combines the Ionian coastal landscape of Scanzano Jonico with distinctive natural and cultural experiences. Wide sandy beaches, coastal pine forests that protect these beaches, historic buildings and cycling routes give your trip different focal points. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or other accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether you would like to spend your days mainly at the beach, in nature, exploring cultural attractions or combining all of these options.

Beaches, Dunes and the Cavone Estuary

The coastal landscape of Scanzano Jonico includes coastal pine forests that protect the wide sandy beaches. Terzo Cavone is a distinctive stretch of coastline. The beach lies near the mouth of the Cavone River and is protected by large trees. The estuary itself is of botanical and ornithological interest and is home to a diverse bird population. Visitors interested in natural history can therefore make this area a separate focus of their travel plans.

The combination of coast and history also characterises the area. Near the broad, golden-coloured beach of Scanzano Jonico stands an imposing Aragonese watchtower. It was built to defend against Saracen raids. Scanzano Jonico is also home to the only lighthouse in the whole of Basilicata. This makes it possible to combine a peaceful day at the beach with landscape and historical impressions during a stay with varied daily rhythms, without every activity having to follow the same holiday pattern.

Cultural Heritage Among Churches and Noble Residences

The cultural aspect of your trip introduces you to several distinct testimonies to the area's history. The Chiesa dell’Assunta preserves a silver crown from a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1715 and houses wooden sculptures from the 18th century. The Chiesa Madre Maria SS Annunziata has a large stained-glass window depicting the Annunciation. The window measures eight square metres and has dimensions of 4 × 2 metres. The church was consecrated on 24 March 1963.

Religious traditions include the religious and secular festivities in honour of Maria SS Annunziata. They have taken place every year on 2 May since 2016. In addition, the portal of the small Theotokos Chapel in the Palazzo Baronale features a bas-relief of the Annunciation dating from the year 1000. A culturally focused trip allows you to combine sacred art, architecture and local traditions.

The Palazzo Baronale was built by Pedro de Toledo and is commonly known as the Palazzaccio. As a feudal building, it has a square floor plan, an inner courtyard and a crenellated tower. Palazzo Recoleta has a wide portal, a square tower and two towers at the corners of the façade. The Masseria di Recoleta is a fortified manor house from the 17th and 18th centuries, apparently built on the site of an ancient fortified medieval village. These different architectural forms also make the area's history tangible for visitors who do not want to spend their holiday exclusively on the coast.

Choosing the Right Base

When looking for a holiday apartment in Lido Di Scanzano, you can use your preferred daily activities as a guide. Those who want to focus on the coastal landscape can include the beach, coastal pine forests and the area around the Cavone estuary in their plans. For culturally oriented days, the churches, the Palazzo Baronale, Palazzo Recoleta and the Masseria di Recoleta offer different points of interest. There are also routes suitable for cycling and exploring the area. Boat trips can also be arranged from the Ionian coast near Scanzano Jonico. This leaves room for active exploration, observing nature and more relaxing days on the coast.
