Ferrandina: Archaeology, Churches and Olive Culture
Accommodation in Ferrandina
Ferrandina combines archaeological discoveries, historic religious buildings and a distinctive hilly landscape. The town is situated in an area with steeply sloping hillsides, making it suitable for a trip where culture and landscape are closely connected. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can make their preferred daily activities the starting point: the focus can be either on museums and historic buildings or on the distinctive landscape and the area’s agricultural character.
Experience archaeology up close
An important point of interest is MAFE. It opened in 2021 with the permanent exhibition “Ferrandina: storia e archeologia di un territorio millenario” and is housed in the monumental complex of San Domenico. The MAFE VR Experience also allows visitors to virtually explore a fortified Lucanian city from the 4th century BC. This digital experience complements engagement with the area’s long history.
You can also encounter tangible traces of the past outside the museum. The remains of an oil mill dating from the 4th century BC were found in Ferrandina. Sections of the outer walls and several interior rooms have survived from the ruins of Castello di Uggiano. Those who want to learn about historic places not only through exhibitions but also through preserved architectural elements will find different ways to engage with the past here.
Churches and historic spaces
The foundation stone of the Monastero di Santa Chiara was laid in June 1610. The first floor of this monastery houses the Museo Comunale della Civiltà Contadina e dei Mestieri Antichi. The museum comprises seven exhibition rooms featuring agricultural equipment, tools used by carpenters and blacksmiths, kitchen utensils and everyday objects. Workshops and educational programmes for schools and visitors supplement the exhibition with practical learning formats.
Construction of the Convento di San Domenico was completed in 1790. The first floor of the former Convento di San Domenico houses the Biblioteca Comunale. The Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria della Croce was built in the late 15th century in the Apulian-Romanesque style. It houses a wooden statue of the Madonna della Croce dating from 1530. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine contains a carved wooden door from the 16th century and the painting “L’Apparizione della Madonna a San Giacinto” from 1606.
Olive landscape and travel planning
More than 200,000 Majatica olive trees grow in the Ferrandina area. This number gives the landscape a distinct agricultural character and makes olive culture a subject in its own right during a trip. If you would like to focus your stay on history, regional traditions and the landscape, Ferrandina offers several different points of connection.
To get there, the SS 407 Basentana leads to an exit for Ferrandina. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether you would primarily like to focus on the cultural sights, museums and historic spaces, or on the surrounding area with its hilly landscape. This allows you to match your choice of a holiday apartment in Ferrandina to your personal pace of travel and the discoveries you would like to make, without turning individual experiences into a fixed route.
If you would like to add further destinations to your travel plans, you can also consider Matera, Irsina, Peschiera, Pisticci, Grassano, Grottole, Accettura and Metaponto.
