Irsina: Village, Trails and Regional Discoveries
Accommodation in Irsina
Irsina combines a historic townscape with trails through an expansive landscape and a distinctive culinary tradition. The ancient Borgo Montepeloso, today’s Irsina, is situated in a scenic location at an altitude of around 550 metres between the valleys of the Bradano and the Basentello. Those planning a trip combining culture, outdoor activities and regional discoveries will find a variety of options for shaping their days here.
Historic Irsina between the Village and Art
The Borgo Antico still preserves recognisable architectural forms from its early development in its narrow lanes. Old gates open up the walls, while round watchtowers characterise the historic setting. Cultural highlights also include the Chiesa di San Francesco, a religious landmark built in the 13th century with frescoes from the Middle Ages and the Baroque period, as well as the Concattedrale S. Maria Assunta. It houses a painted stone statue of Saint Euphemia attributed to Andrea Mantegna.
At the Museo Civico Janora, the red-figure calyx krater from the first quarter of the 4th century BC is the central exhibit. Palazzo Nugent was built over an earlier medieval castle dating from the 14th or 15th century. Attached to it is the Porta Maggiore, considered the city’s main entrance. The church of Santa Maria Nova stands on the site known as Santa Maria di Juso and preserves traces of the Basilian monks.
Routes for Walks and Landscape Experiences
The municipal project Irsina eSCUrsioni offers four themed routes exploring the Borgo and the areas beyond its walls. The route to Taccone follows a section of the Via Francigena del Sud and runs along unpaved paths between farmhouses. In addition, CAI Trail 427 leads from Via A. Vespucci to Borgo Taccone, while CAI Trail 428 runs from Borgo Taccone to Castello di Monteserico.
CAI Trail 428 also corresponds to a section of the Via Francigena and offers views across areas shaped by agriculture. CAI Trail 401 begins in the hamlet of Santa Maria D’Irsi and leads through the Valle del Torrente Basentello, Matinella, Irsitello, Monte d’Irsi and the Valle di San Vito. This makes it possible to choose between historic town motifs, open agricultural landscapes and longer stretches of trail when planning a trip, without reducing every experience to the same kind of excursion.
A distinctive perspective on the landscape is offered by the underground Bottini di C.da Fontana system. Along an accessible underground route, visitors can observe the course of the groundwater and the basins used for depositing the lime-rich material. In the early years of the 20th century, the water system enabled the expansion and reinforcement of the wells throughout the town of Irsina. Monte d’Irsi in the area around Irsina also combines an archaeological site with a scenic landscape. For walks along unpaved paths through an unspoilt landscape, the Bosco di Verrutoli is an option.
Regional Specialities and Local Projects
Irsina’s culinary traditions include the traditional sweets I Pezzetti di Irsina. They are prepared with fig molasses and have an unevenly applied white icing. Traditional homemade pasta includes cavatelli with beans and wild fennel. Alongside the historic sights, such regional specialities give the trip its own distinctive culinary focus.
Cyclists can also experience Irsina from a regional perspective. The By Bike Irsina project maps cycling routes in Irsina and the surrounding area. It is also intended to make the cycling-tourism connections from Irsina to the Adriatic coast, as well as to the Via Francigena on the section between Irsina and Matera, more usable. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday house, you can therefore consider whether your focus is more on the Borgo, the hiking trails, the landscape areas or a combination of different interests.
