Historic Centre and Pilgrimage Tradition

The Arco di San Marco is a public monument dedicated to religious worship and the pilgrimage tradition in this place. It therefore represents an aspect of San Marco in Lamis that is revealed particularly through religious references and historic routes.

The Arco di San Marco stands in Piazza Europa, at the meeting point of the routes leading to the former monastery of Santa Maria di Stignano and the Monastery of San Matteo. At the same time, it symbolises the pilgrimage along the Via Sacra Langobardorum–Via Francigena.

The Convento di San Matteo was built between the 9th and 10th centuries by Benedictines on an already existing hospice. The Centro storico di San Marco in Lamis lies in the valley of the Torrente Jana, in the Padula or Padule area, where the town's original settlement presumably began.

The Convento di Santa Maria di Stignano lies on the ancient Via Francigena del Sud towards Monte Sant’Angelo. Its church and bell tower were completed in the 17th century.

The Chiesa Madre is dedicated to the Annunciation, was built in the 18th century and has a three-aisled layout with barrel vaults.

Karst Landscape and Natural History

The Grave di Zazzano is located on the karst plateau of San Marco in Lamis. The area is characterised by pronounced surface karst features and numerous sinkholes. Beneath a broad, funnel-shaped rock opening, the Grave di Zazzano descends approximately 95 metres.

The section of the Valle Carbonara that begins in San Marco in Lamis is called Vallone di Stignano.

The Museo Paleontologico Borgo Celano is located in Borgo Celano, a district of San Marco in Lamis. Near the visitor centre, it has an outdoor area with numerous dinosaur reconstructions and explanatory information panels.

Another point of natural-history interest is located in a quarry near Borgo Celano: around ten dinosaur footprints were discovered there. Most are approximately 15 to 40 centimetres long and are attributed mainly to medium-sized to large bipedal theropods.

Traditional Events and Route Connection

The traditional Processione delle Fracchie takes place on Good Friday. The Fracchie serve as torches that illuminate the path of Our Lady of Sorrows Mary into the town centre. The event combines religious tradition with a clearly visible element of the local culture.

The approximately 110-kilometre Via Francigena route from Troia to Monte Sant’Angelo passes through Troia, Lucera, San Severo, San Marco in Lamis and San Giovanni Rotondo before reaching Monte Sant’Angelo.
