Gressoney-La-Trinité: Walser Culture, Chapels and Monte Rosa

Gressoney-La-Trinité combines sacred architecture, Walser culture and high-Alpine destinations to create a diverse travel experience. The Chiesa parrocchiale della S.S Trinità was founded in 1702 and is dedicated to the Santissima Trinità, the Holy Trinity. Its main altar dates from the same period as the church, is designed in the Baroque style with Renaissance influences, and is made of gilded, painted wood.

Sacred Art and History

The Cappella di Orsia was built in 1652 under the direction of Peter Knòbal and rebuilt and extended in 1714. The Cappella di Oagre bears the designations “Gnaden Brunnen” and “the miraculous spring”; it was built in 1776 at the request of Rev. J. Curtaz and is dedicated to the Madonna delle Nevi, Our Lady of the Snows. The Cappella di Biel was built in 1736 by Marc Thédy and other residents of the village and is dedicated to Saints Roch and Sebastian.

Chapels with Different Routes

The routes to these destinations differ clearly. The Cappella di Orsia can be reached via an uphill mule track located five minutes from Regional Road No. 43 near Staffal. The Cappella di Oagre is a ten-minute walk from the car park in the village of Staffal. The Cappella di Biel is a five-minute walk from the car park at the end of the municipal road to Biel. This allows you to distinguish between shorter and longer routes when planning your day.

The Cappella di Sant'Anna adds a distinctly high-altitude destination: it lies at 2,178 m on the slopes leading to Colle di Bettaforca, in a place of great scenic interest. You can reach it on foot via the one-hour Sentiero 8 from Staffal or by lift. The chapel was built in 1726 at the request of Notary J. Thedy, the first judge of the Barony of Valleise; it was restored in 1995.

Walser Culture and the Mountain Landscape

At the Walser Ecomuseum, regional culture is presented through specific spaces and exhibitions. The CASA MUSEO – PÒTZSCHHUS section is housed in a “stadel”, the dialect term for a typical Walser house, and features permanent exhibitions about the region. The Gressoney-La-Trinité tourist office is located in the characteristic Walser Ecomuseum in the village of Tache, between the town hall and the parish church.

For alpine winter days, there is Monterosa Ski: the ski area connects the three Alpine valleys of Val d'Ayas, Valle di Gressoney and Alagna in Valsesia into a single ski area overlooking the Monte Rosa massif between the Aosta Valley and Piedmont. The mountain landscape thus extends across several valleys.
