Bellante is a destination for anyone who wants to combine historical traces, unusual details of the town and far-reaching views. The town was once an old fief of the Acquaviva family. Remains of fortifications, churches and the medieval structure of the historic centre still shape its appearance today. Those planning a trip with diverse cultural interests will find points of connection here ranging from antiquity to exhibitions and stage events in Ripattoni.

Historic Bellante Among Walls and Alleys

The historic centre preserves the typical structure of a medieval fortified settlement, known as incastellamento. Part of the ancient fortification walls has been preserved along with a square defensive tower and an entrance gate. The gate to the borgo was built in the 12th century, making it one of the town’s notable historical landmarks.

A distinctive feature is the “vie acquarie”. These narrow alleys running between the houses were once used to collect rainwater. They give the town centre a very tangible character rooted in everyday history. The scene is complemented by the parish church of Santa Maria with its terracotta façade and the church of Santa Croce, which has a Renaissance portal. The town hall tower also tells part of Bellante’s history: its weather vane bears the initials of the four cardinal directions, a cross, the municipal coat of arms and the inscription “Universitas Bellanti”.

Church Art and Evidence from Antiquity

The church of Santa Maria houses an Epiphany painting by Nicola Monti from 1793. The work is attributed to the school of Paolo Veronese and offers a tangible insight into the town’s sacred art. Among Bellante’s older artefacts is an oval funerary stele from the 6th century BC with a stylised depiction of a deceased person. A sandstone stele with a Palaeo-Sabellic inscription bears inventory number 111434 and is dated to the end of the 6th century BC.

In Bellante, these different periods are not perceived as abstract years standing side by side, but rather form a thematic range for trip planning: the medieval townscape, Renaissance elements, church painting and pre-Christian artefacts appeal to travellers with different cultural interests.

Ripattoni: Castle Remains and Cultural Events

The municipality includes the district of Ripattoni. The remains of a 14th-century castle with a massive tower on a square ground plan have been preserved there. At the foot of the castle tower stands Palazzo Saliceti, one of the historic buildings associated with the old feudal landowning nobility. The church of Santa Maria del Erulis, also known as Santa Maria della Misericordia, is likewise located in Ripattoni. It has very ancient origins and combines classical elements with medieval walls.

RipattoniArte includes art exhibitions and photography exhibitions as well as concerts and theatre and dance performances. The municipality’s events calendar for 2025 listed the 19th edition of Ripattoniarte 2025 in the Borgo di Ripattoni, with the theme “L’ARTISTA E LO SPAZIO”. It was organised by APS Pro Loco Ripattoni and Associazione BellantArte. This specific event example shows the range of cultural experiences Ripattoni can offer in addition to its historic buildings.

Views as Far as the Adriatic and Choosing Your Accommodation

From the Belvedere in Bellante, the view stretches from the Montagna dei Fiori to the Adriatic. This creates an appealing contrast with the narrow alleys and historically shaped buildings of the town centre. If you primarily want to explore the fortifications, churches and small architectural details, you can make Bellante itself the focus when searching for a holiday apartment. Those more interested in castle remains, historic buildings and the cultural programme in Ripattoni can take this district into account when planning their trip. There is no need to make a blanket choice: what matters is whether your stay should be shaped more by the townscape, by art and history or by expansive landscapes.
