Mazzocco: Wine History and Nature
Accommodation in Mazzocco
The Cantina Mazzarosa in Mazzocco lies in the heart of the Riserva Naturale del Borsacchio. Here, wine history and protected nature come together. When choosing a holiday apartment, this provides a practical starting point: consider whether nature, culture or activity will shape your stay most. Other experiences range from historic cellar details to a mountain bike route between Roseto degli Abruzzi and Mazzocco.
The Borsacchio Natural Area
The Riserva del Borsacchio was established in 2005 to protect its natural heritage from development. Around 120 plant species grow in the area, including plants that are rare or endangered in Abruzzo. The endangered Kentish plover also finds habitat for nesting on protected beaches here. These features give the natural area a specific significance: it is not just about the landscape, but also about preserving plants and nesting sites.
The Pineta Mazzarosa is located in the area around Mazzocco. An avenue of maritime pines and holm oaks, along with around a hundred large trees considered natural monuments, characterises the grove. The grounds are privately owned and not accessible to visitors. The reserve and the Pineta therefore represent different connections with nature: a larger protected area with plant and bird habitats on the one hand, and a private, inaccessible stand of trees on the other.
Mazzarosa: Vineyards and Cellar
The vineyards of Azienda Agricola e Vinicola Mazzarosa Devincenzi lie on hills at an elevation of around 150 metres. The sea is only a few kilometres away, with the Gran Sasso in the background. The hillside setting, proximity to the sea and mountain backdrop together define the landscape around the vineyards.
The Mazzarosa cellar retains its original appearance from the 1860s. Among its distinctive features are a wooden vat with a capacity of 1,000 hectolitres, described as the largest wooden vat in Europe, and a rare water-powered lift. The large vat, historic technology and preserved appearance offer different points of interest for anyone curious about the history and architectural features of a wine cellar.
The Architecture of Villa Mazzarosa
Villa Mazzarosa has a compact floor plan, four prominently emphasised corner sections, two storeys and a mezzanine. The four corner sections give the building a distinctive structure; the mezzanine is an intermediate floor and adds another architectural level to the description. This makes it easy to distinguish the villa’s basic shape and layout, even without specialist knowledge. For architecture enthusiasts, the appeal lies in the combination of a compact design and emphasised building corners.
Mountain Biking and Choosing Accommodation
A mountain bike route recorded in July 2019 runs between Roseto degli Abruzzi and Mazzocco and is 44 kilometres long. The distance provides a specific basis for planning your ride. If you plan to include the route, check current road and route conditions before setting off.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use these different themes to help choose where to stay. First, consider whether nature conservation, architecture, wine history or cycling is the main focus of your trip. This turns your different interests into a practical aid to decision-making, without requiring you to combine nature, architectural history and a bike ride into a single itinerary.
