Musellaro reveals its character both in the cultivated landscapes along its hiking trails and in its long history as a village. Along the route from Bolognano to Musellaro, the landscape changes; nearby, the striking formations of Orta Canyon add another dimension. In the village, the Church of Santa Maria del Balzo and a fortified complex of houses and a castle offer other discoveries. When choosing your holiday apartment, you might consider whether you would prefer to focus your stay on hiking landscapes and natural formations or on historic architecture.

Hiking Trails, Cultivated Landscapes and Orta Canyon

The A3 hiking trail from Bolognano to Musellaro first passes through mixed woodland. Near Musellaro, it then runs through olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields. The trail thus connects different landscapes: woodland at the start and agricultural land further along, near Musellaro.

A different combination characterises the Luco plain on the A2 hiking trail from Musellaro to San Tommaso: imposing limestone towers, a dense, centuries-old oak forest and some cultivated fields. While the A3 shows how the landscape changes along the route, the A2 brings limestone formations and ancient oak woodland together with agricultural land. This comparison can help you distinguish between the different landscape experiences when planning your outings.

Near Musellaro lie the “Rapide di Santa Lucia,” the narrowest and most spectacular section of Orta Canyon. Fast-flowing green-blue water has shaped the narrow limestone banks into meanders, waterfalls and plunge pools. The rapids are also among the Maiella Geopark’s most significant geosites. The changing woodland and cultivated landscapes along the trails thus contrast with a striking canyon landscape shaped by water.

The Orta Valley and Its Nature

The Valle dell’Orta Regional Nature Reserve was established in 1989, is part of Maiella National Park and covers 378 hectares. It extends across the municipalities of Sant’Eufemia a Majella, Roccacaramanico, San Vittorino, Caramanico Terme, Salle, Musellaro, San Valentino and Bolognano in the Province of Pescara. The area around Musellaro is also rich in springs, including some sulphurous ones. The natural scenery therefore ranges from cultivated fields and oak forest to limestone formations, canyon landscapes and springs.

The Church and Fortified Complex of Houses and a Castle

The Church of Santa Maria del Balzo was consecrated in 1213 under the name Santa Maria del Castello di Musegliero. Access is through the main entrance on Piazza SS. Crocifisso, 65020 Musellaro PE. The entrance portal bears the coats of arms of the Davalos-d’Aquino families and is dated 1519. A loophole is visible at the second entrance on the main façade of Castello di Musellaro—another specific detail of the local architecture.

The Santissimo Crocifisso of Musellaro is now kept in the chapel of the Church of Santa Maria del Balzo. It is the focus of enduring popular devotion and a destination for pilgrimages, particularly on 19 September, when its feast is celebrated each year. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the current programme locally.

The old part of Musellaro is home to an ancient, fortified complex of houses and a castle. Palazzo Baronale, also known as Castello di Musellaro, forms its core. The Castello consists of three sections of the building with different uses; the central section now serves as a hostel. Check independently whether it is operating before planning to stay there. This way, you can appreciate the historic site as a complex while distinguishing its architectural interest from its possible use as accommodation.
