Montereale combines a distinctive high-altitude setting with an unusually diverse local history. The built-up centre lies on a ridge and overlooks the broad Alta Valle dell’Aterno. At the same time, the River Aterno rises within the municipal area. Those looking for a holiday destination with landscapes, historic buildings and regional cuisine will find several different focal points here for planning their trip.

Landscape between the Ridge and the Source

The location in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park shapes the landscape around Montereale. Another way to experience the natural side of the town is the Fra Clemente spring. It is set amid greenery and has a rest and refreshment area. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on nature experiences, local history or a combination of both themes.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The townscape contains numerous traces of different periods. The Torre Municipale has a bell that was used in the Middle Ages to call the inhabitants of the surrounding settlements together in emergencies. The town hall, which is partly housed in a former Augustinian monastery, contains two Roman stylophorous lions.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria in Assunta is the largest church in Montereale and was rebuilt between 1745 and 1750. The Chiesa del Beato Andrea was rebuilt in 1726 on the ruins of an earlier 13th-century church dedicated to Saint Augustine. The church also contains a chapel with a silver reliquary in which the preserved body of Blessed Andrea is kept.

The Abbazia della Madonna in Pantanis also reaches far back into history. It was built between the 11th century and the first half of the 12th century and renovated in the 17th and 18th centuries. It includes a mausoleum dedicated to Blessed Domenico da Cesariano. Santa Maria intra moenia is a 15th-century church with a Romanesque side portal. In the 16th century, Palazzo Farnese was the private residence of Margherita d’Austria.

The Palazzo Mari offers a particularly memorable detail: in a room on the first floor, a long pipe concealed within the wall connected the room to the entrance. This made it possible to see who was knocking at the portal without being seen oneself. Details like these give the historical exploration of Montereale a vivid, almost everyday perspective.

Regional Impressions and Local Traditions

The tourist route through the Alta Valle dell’Aterno area provides useful orientation for further excursions. Alongside Montereale, the participating municipalities listed are Barete, Cagnano Amiterno and Capitignano. In culinary terms, dishes such as Li strancogliuni, Stringozzi a cascio e pepe, Lu farricellu, Patate refritte and Lu pulentone form part of Montereale’s tradition.

Two named festivals are associated with specific periods and places: the Fiesta de la Mont, also known as Festa della Montagna, is associated with the end of July in Montereale. The Festa di San Rocco is connected with the month of August and the village of Cabbia. If you are planning your trip around cultural experiences and regional cuisine, these details can be included in your timing.
