Castel Di Sangro combines art, historic buildings, unusual reminders of everyday life and impressive travel experiences. Those looking for a holiday apartment as a base for a varied stay can combine local culture with a spectacular railway line, nature trails, winter sports and the Alto Sangro region. Particularly interesting is the blend of urban history and the landscapes revealed on excursions in the surrounding area.

Art and History in the Townscape

A good starting point is the Pinacoteca Patiniana in the Renaissance palace of the De Petra family, also known as Casa del Leone. The Pinacoteca opened in 2006 and displays works by the artist Teofilo Patini, who was born in Castel di Sangro, as well as by his students. At the Museo Civico Aufidenate, the department of prehistory and early history takes visitors further back in time: fossils, evidence from the Italic period and Oscan inscriptions are on display there. The Museo Civico Aufidenate was founded in 1898 and restored, or newly established there, in the Convento della Maddalena.

The churches, too, bear witness to different eras. The Chiesa dei SS. Crispino e Crispiniano has a Romanesque stone portal with a round arch, alternating pilasters and columns, and carved capitals. Its altar dates from the 16th century and was salvaged from the former Chiesa della Maddalena. The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta was designed by the Lombard architect F. Ferradini and dates from 1695. The Church of the Annunziata, by contrast, is a modern reconstruction of the 1430 building destroyed in the war and has a Baroque façade.

In the Civita, the oldest part of the town, a well-preserved Neviera survives with its structure intact. It was used to collect snow and preserve food during the summer. On Colle San Giovanni above the town lie the ruins of the Castello dei Sangro, incorporated into traditional Samnite and Roman fortifications. The Chiesa di S. Nicola, one of the oldest churches in the town, was once a Grancia of the commandery of the Knights Hospitaller of San Tommaso de L'Aquila and also housed Pope Celestine V. The Chiesa della Madonna degli Eremiti was restored in 1696 after being damaged by the earthquake of 1456, and stands in the centuries-old forest of Scodanibbio.

Rail Journey, Nature and Special Experiences

The Ferrovia dei Parchi offers a unique perspective on the region. The winding and spectacular railway line is 118 kilometres long. From Rivisondoli-Pescocostanzo station, it climbs to 1,268 metres, then descends to Castel di Sangro at 793 metres, rises again to 923 metres at S. Pietro Avellana and finally drops to 631 metres at Carpinone. Those who enjoy experiencing landscapes from a train can consider this route an exceptional part of their travel plans.

At the Orto Botanico of the Museo Civico Aufidenate, nature trails lead to a limestone block known as a tavola dei monaci. In Roccacinquemiglia, the Big Bench was installed by the Associazione Pro Rocca near the town centre as part of the Big Bench Community Project; it serves as a viewpoint with panoramic views. Fly fishing is another special theme: the Museo Internazionale della pesca a mosca, named after Stanislao Kuckiewicz, was inaugurated in 2000. On the Sangro, at the Ponte della Maddalena, approximately 100 metres upstream from the Ponte di ferro at the confluence of the Zittola River, is the CONI-Palestra di Pesca a Mosca. No-kill trout fishing is practised there.

For winter travel planning, it is also important to note that Castel di Sangro, in the wider Alto Sangro area, is well connected to the ski facilities of Roccaraso, Pescocostanzo and Rivisondoli. This makes accommodation in Castel Di Sangro appealing to travellers who want to combine historical discoveries with a journey on the Ferrovia dei Parchi or winter days. Those travelling with different age groups can vary their days between museums, churches, nature trails and landscape experiences without limiting their stay to just one activity.
