Pennapiedimonte lies at an altitude of 669 metres on the eastern slope of the Maiella, on a steep ridge above the Avello Valley. The distinctive townscape combines an impressive mountain setting with cliff houses, historic buildings and viewpoints.

Cliff Houses and History in the Townscape

The cliff houses of Pennapiedimonte were generally multi-storey residential buildings. Stables and kitchens were located on the ground floor, while the bedrooms were on the upper floors. This layout brings the town’s distinctive construction methods to life and offers a tangible way to engage with its history.

Cultural exploration also includes the Casa rupestre on Via della Grotta. It can be reached from Piazza Umberto I via a footpath through the historic centre, which is also considered accessible to people with reduced mobility. The Torre Romana houses an exhibition of archaeological material from the Italic necropolis. This necropolis was discovered during excavations in 1982 and dates from the 5th to the 4th century BC.

Another notable building is the Church of Saints Silvester and Roch. In the 18th century, it was expanded into a Baroque religious complex with a bell tower and rectory, and it houses paintings by Nicola Bonaventura Ranieri. A stay in Pennapiedimonte can therefore also be centred on sacred art and local history.

Views, a Rock Arch and a Medieval Fountain

At the Belvedere del Balzolo, views open up over the sea and the Avello Valley. A geological landmark is La Pinna, also known as Cimirocco: it is a natural rock arch at an altitude of 705 metres. The two sites offer different highlights and complement the historical exploration with impressions of the landscape.

The Fontana medievale is a monumental fountain made of dressed stone. Four spouts and an L-shaped loggia define its design. Its accessibility is clearly described for planning your day: by car, you can reach it via the one-way Via Fontana; on foot, the walk from the town centre takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Maiella Route and Suitable Accommodation Search

Pennapiedimonte also offers a specific starting point for a trip with a stronger focus on hiking and nature. A route listed in Maiella National Park begins and ends at Località Balzolo in the town of Pennapiedimonte. In addition, the Pischioli mountain hut is located in the Pennapiedimonte area at an altitude of 1,135 metres and offers views of the Avello Valley below.

When searching for accommodation, you can therefore first determine your preferred travel focus: the historic centre, cliff houses and religious buildings favour a culture-oriented stay, while the Belvedere del Balzolo, Località Balzolo and the Maiella route highlight the natural and scenic aspects. This allows you to choose a holiday apartment or holiday home according to the type of days you are planning, without conflating the different experiences.

For your further search, you can also find Palombaro, Crecchio, Fara San Martino, Taranta Peligna, Vacri, Arielli, Canosa Sannita and Casalincontrada.
