Vacri combines archaeological evidence, historic churches and regional pilgrimage traditions to create a destination with an unusual depth of history. If, when travelling with your family, you want to discover not only landscapes but also traces of past cultures and living regional traditions, Vacri offers various starting points for planning your trip. When searching for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on the churches in the town, the history of Porcareccia or the religious traditions of the surrounding area.

Archaeological Traces in Porcareccia

Archaeological remains and structures dating from the 2nd to 3rd century BC were found in Porcareccia near Vacri. They belong to the architectural furnishings of an Italic sanctuary. Further finds indicate that the site was used in the 5th to 6th century BC. They include a bronze statuette of Hercules in attack. The site referred to as the “Italic Temple” is located in C.da Porcareccia in Vacri.

A group of bronze statues of Hercules from the Italic temple in Porcareccia was donated to the Museum of the City of Chieti. For visitors interested in archaeology, this connection offers a special perspective: the history of the site can be traced both through the remains in Porcareccia and through the surviving finds, without the two impressions requiring the same visiting experience.

Churches between the Historic Centre and the Agricultural Landscape

The Chiesa di San Biagio is one of the most important places of worship in Vacri’s historic centre. The first reliable records of the church date from 1308. Construction of the present church began on 22 January 1762 with the laying of the foundation stone and was completed 53 years later, in March 1815. These two dates show that San Biagio has both a long historical background and a clearly dated construction history.

Santa Chiara is considered Vacri’s most representative Baroque building. Its interior is richly and scenographically designed and decorated with stucco and valuable ornamental elements. From the town hall, you can reach Santa Chiara by following paths through the historic centre in 5 to 10 minutes on foot. This makes it possible to include the visit as a manageable walk while exploring the town centre.

San Vincenzo Ferreri has a different character. The church is located in the district of the same name and is a rural church. Its simple structure, plastered façade with gable profile and close relationship with the surrounding agricultural landscape clearly distinguish it from the more representative religious buildings in the town centre. San Vincenzo bears witness to the popular piety associated with Vacri’s rural surroundings. As a tratturale church, meaning a rural or pastoral church, it also represents a type of church that provided spiritual care as well as accommodation for animals and shepherds.

Pilgrimage Routes, Traditions and Regional Connections

The historic sheep track from L’Aquila to Foggia passed through the territory of the municipality of Vacri. This historical connection adds another link between landscape, movement and pastoral use to the sacred sites. In the region surrounding Vacri, the pilgrimage to Madonna delle Grazie in Francavilla al Mare also takes place. The inhabitants of Vacri have observed it on the second Sunday in May for almost four centuries.

The regional language is also part of the town’s cultural identity. The Premio Città di Vacri aims to preserve the Abruzzese dialect. If you plan your trip not only around sights but also around local traditions, this allows you to get to know Vacri from several perspectives: through ancient sanctuaries, ecclesiastical architectural history, rural piety and the preservation of linguistic particularities.

Which Accommodation Location Suits Your Travel Plans?

When searching for a holiday apartment, you can use the experiences you want as a guide. Anyone primarily interested in San Biagio and Santa Chiara can make the historic town centre the focus of their daily itinerary; for Santa Chiara, the walk from the town hall is specified as taking 5 to 10 minutes. Those more interested in Porcareccia, the sanctuary and the archaeological finds can choose a different cultural focus. The pilgrimage to Madonna delle Grazie and the rural character of San Vincenzo Ferreri, in turn, offer access to the region’s religious and agricultural history. This way, you choose your accommodation not according to a general idea of Vacri, but according to the themes that are actually meant to shape your trip.
