Gothic Revival church architecture, a Neoclassical market house and a path along the Ulster Canal give Monaghan a multifaceted character. You can explore the town through its 18th- and 19th-century buildings, museum exhibitions and the accessible section of the Ulster Canal Greenway. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay: architecture and history, or a walk on foot.

Gothic Revival and Neoclassical Architecture

St Macartan’s Cathedral is a detached Catholic cathedral in the Gothic Revival style. It was built between 1861 and 1892 on the southeastern edge of Monaghan Town and is one of Ireland’s notable Gothic Revival buildings. You can visit the exterior, grounds and gates without needing to check opening times. This means you can focus your visit on the architecture and outdoor grounds.

In the centre of Monaghan stands the Monaghan Market House, a Neoclassical building made of grey limestone and built in 1792. Elaborate architectural details define the building. At the same time, Monaghan County Council uses it as an arts venue and gallery. The market house shows that Monaghan’s architectural heritage includes not only historic buildings but also places used for arts events.

The Monaghan Town Heritage Trail leads to historic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Stops include the County Museum, Peter’s Lake and the Courthouse. If you are interested in the town’s history, you can use these stops as inspiration to explore Monaghan beyond a single building.

Personal Stories at the County Museum

The Monaghan County Museum is located at the Peace Campus in Monaghan and is free to visit. Its collection includes more than 50,000 objects dating from prehistoric times to the 20th century. The collection therefore spans a long period and includes different eras, without limiting a museum visit to a single period.

The permanent exhibition “Bordering Realities” offers a distinct perspective. It is not arranged chronologically, but is based on personal accounts. It focuses on how life on a border shapes people. Rather than reading the exhibition as a timeline, you encounter the subject through individual experiences. This makes it a fitting stop if, alongside architectural history, you are also interested in personal stories and the significance of borders.

Walking Along the Ulster Canal

The continuous section of the Ulster Canal Greenway that is currently accessible on foot through Monaghan Town is about four kilometres long and opened in 2013. The constructed section is rated easy; much of it is suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. If you are travelling with a pushchair or prefer a route rated easy, this information is a useful guide. Along the Greenway, you will pass two locks, a lock keeper’s house and three bridges.

Another way to get some exercise in town is to walk around its four squares: Church Square, The Diamond, Old Cross Square and Market Square. At a leisurely pace, the walk takes about 20 minutes. This estimate applies to this walk and its unhurried pace; it does not describe the duration of the Greenway section. The two options are therefore clearly different in form: a short walk here, and an approximately four-kilometre-long path along the Ulster Canal there.

Arts and Events

The Garage Theatre on the Monaghan Education Campus is a venue covering 1,940 square metres. Its auditorium has 289 seats; the venue also includes a studio, a fine art gallery, a licensed bar and a café. The different spaces bring performances and visual art together under one roof. If you want to include cultural venues in your trip alongside historic sites, the Garage Theatre offers another aspect of Monaghan’s cultural life.

You can also explore other local pages: Doohamlat, Ballybay, Castleblayney, Lisnalong, Mullinacross, Clontibret, Glaslough and Carrickmacross.
