At Leabgarrow Beach, Leabgarrow’s connection to the Blueway routes becomes especially tangible. The Arranmore ferry pier and Leadhb Gharbh Pier are also local landmarks. When choosing a holiday home, it is worth looking at more than just the length of the water routes: their grading and conditions matter too.

Blueway Routes with Different Requirements

Blueway Trail 5 at Leabgarrow Beach is suitable for beginners and more experienced participants. However, beginners must be accompanied by an approved provider. The waters are rated from moderate to challenging, and the route is in an area with a moderate tidal range. Tides and weather affect conditions on the water, so guided participation is part of the planning for beginners.

The Carricklea More Blueway at Leabgarrow Beach is for more experienced participants. It follows the coast, is less than one kilometre long and passes through waters two to five metres deep. Its grading as an advanced route remains important: the short distance does not mean it is suitable for beginners. Sea conditions can vary.

The Árainn Mhór–Ailt an Chorráin Blueway also offers opportunities for walking, cycling, snorkelling, sailing and kayaking. Leabgarrow Beach is designated as its start and end point. This brings different types of activities together; you can match the one that shapes your holiday plans against the specific requirements of the two water routes.

Ferry Piers and Getting Your Bearings

Regular, reliable passenger and vehicle ferries from Burtonport Harbour make Árainn Mhór accessible year-round. Check current ferry times before travelling. In Leabgarrow are the Arranmore ferry pier and Leadhb Gharbh Pier. Boathouse Beach Bites is directly above Leabgarrow Pier, and is the first and last stop before the Arranmore ferry.

Boathouse Beach Bites provides visitors with local information and ferry times. Its offerings include hot and cold drinks, ice cream and takeaway food. This makes it a practical stop for getting your bearings, as well as a place to eat or drink while out and about. As service details can change, check the latest information before your visit.

The Island Route as a Longer Hike

Further afield in the region on Árainn Mhór is the Slí Árainn Mhór – Arranmore Island Loop. The circular route is 17.8 kilometres long and takes you into the island’s wild, uninhabited interior and along its western side. A two-kilometre detour branches off the route to the remote lighthouse at Binrawros Point. This is a different scale from the Carricklea More route, which is less than one kilometre long; these figures describe the distances, not the difficulty of the routes.

More to Explore in County Donegal

At the level of the wider destination of County Donegal, there are also distinct cultural and landscape themes. Guided tours of Donegal Castle trace its history from the era of the Gaelic lords, through the Plantation and its long period as a ruin, to its recent restoration. Illustrated treasure hunts there are aimed at children. If a tour is important to your plans, check its availability before travelling.

Malin Head offers a different focus: it is the northernmost point of Ireland, and a circular route follows the coast to Banba’s Crown. These County Donegal themes complement, but do not replace, the specific water activities and ferry information in Leabgarrow.

When looking for a holiday home, it therefore helps to decide what matters most: will your plans focus mainly on the Blueways at Leabgarrow Beach and getting your bearings for the ferry, or would you also like to include the distinct hiking and cultural themes further afield in the region? This lets you match the holiday you want to the right destination focus without assuming that a shorter route has an easier grading.
