History, Art and Technology in County Donegal
Donegal Castle was the personal stronghold of Red Hugh O’Donnell, Lord of Tír Conaill. Guided tours tell the story of the castle, from the time of the Gaelic lords through the Plantation and its long period as a ruin to its recent restoration. Check the availability of tours before your visit. Illustrated treasure hunts are available for children. Doe Castle offers a different historical perspective: it is a medieval stronghold of the MacSweeneys. Grianán of Aileach is a state-owned National Monument in the care of the Office of Public Works. At Newmills Corn and Flax Mills, architectural history and technology come together: the oldest surviving building is 400 years old, and visitors can see one of Ireland’s largest waterwheels in operation. The Glebe Gallery and Garden – Derek Hill House adds an exceptional art collection to these cultural attractions.
Coastal Views and Nature Experiences
Glenveagh National Park and Castle brings together mountains, lakes, waterfalls, valleys and native oak forests with a castle that retains its original interiors. Visitors can see red deer there and look out for reintroduced golden eagles. A Trail Walker Bus runs to some of the best starting points for the walking trails; check before travelling whether it runs on your chosen date.
Fanad Lighthouse is in County Donegal, between Lough Swilly and Mulroy Bay. The tour lasts 45 minutes; a virtual reality experience, “The Storm, The Sea, The Saldanha,” is also available there. Check in advance whether both experiences are available. Malin Head is the northernmost point of Ireland and is known for its dramatic scenery and beautiful beaches. A circular trail follows the coast to Banba’s Crown. On the southwest coast of County Donegal, you can hike to the cliffs of Sliabh Liag (Slieve League). A boat trip from nearby Teelin Harbour reaches the base of the cliffs; check in advance whether the trip operates on your travel date.
A Seasonal Glimpse of the Region
The weekly Dunfanaghy Country Market offers local food and fresh produce. As the market is seasonal, check the latest details before your trip. County Donegal offers a range of options: historical tours, art and technology, walks, coastal scenery or a visit to a market. Consider which of these regional experiences you would like to include in your travel plans, and tailor your holiday rental search to your own plans.
