Bailieborough combines a striking local history with discoveries around the lake and countryside. At Bailieborough Bridewell, the focus is on the justice system of the past and the lives of its inmates; nearby, trails run alongside Castle Lake and up to the Loughanleagh ridge. When choosing a holiday rental in Bailieborough, you can weigh up whether you want to explore mainly historic sites or also include experiences in nature in your trip.

History at the Bridewell and Courthouse

Bailieborough Bridewell was built in 1833 and closed in 1900. Alongside the historic Bailieborough Courthouse, built in 1817, it provides a distinctive setting for the history of the town. The visitor experience at the Bridewell covers the justice system of the past, the inmates’ daily lives and the role of the prison keeper, known as “the Keeper”, who lived with his family above the cells.

The Three Folk Museum is also housed in the Bridewell. It is dedicated to the heritage of the Gaels, Ulster Scots and English settlers, whose histories are intertwined in this region. The Building Bridges Mural at the Bridewell also features these communities: the coloured arches of a depicted bridge represent Ulster Scots, Gaels and English people. The Courthouse complex also includes a Plantation Museum as well as cultural and exhibition spaces; the Plantation Museum is considered the first of its kind on the island of Ireland.

A particularly notable historic item at the Bridewell is the Corrowdownan Manuscript of 1611. It records a land grant made by King James I to John Browne from Scotland during the early Plantation of Ulster. The Bridewell and the Courthouse are also included in the Ulster Scots Heritage Trail of Cavan Monaghan.

Discover local history and landscapes

The ruins of the old Church of Ireland stand at the highest point in Bailieborough. The present-day Church of Ireland replaced the old church in 1835. The adjoining cemetery is the resting place of many notable town residents, including ancestors of the writer Henry James. This means that traces of history extend beyond the Bridewell and Courthouse to the people connected with Bailieborough.

The Castle Lake forest trail is about 1 km from Bailieborough. It runs around the lake and offers lake views throughout; an additional loop extends the route by 3 km. Along the way, you will pass a monument to those who fell at Rebel Hill in 1798 and the remains of Bailieborough Castle. The longer version of the Castle Lake Loop also passes the graves of the Marist Brothers who lived at Bailieborough Castle.

Loughanleagh lies between Bailieborough and Kingscourt, on the R165 in the east of County Cavan. The ridge is about 5 km long and up to 1 km wide, reaches 344 m above sea level, and offers panoramic views of up to fourteen surrounding counties of Ireland. With the forest trail and the ridge, you can choose between different landscape experiences: lake views on a circuit or a far-reaching view from higher ground.

If you would also like to fit in a workout, there is a gym with cardio equipment, resistance machines, free weights and barbells. These facilities offer a different kind of activity from the historic visits and outdoor trails.

Bailieborough Poetry Festival takes place annually. According to local tourism information, Town Lake is suitable for coarse fishing and pike fishing. Together with the museums, historic buildings and trails, these offer a range of cultural, nature and leisure interests to consider when planning your stay.

If history is your main interest, the Bridewell, Courthouse and old Church of Ireland offer different ways to explore the town’s past. For a stay focused on the landscape, you can add the Castle Lake forest trail and Loughanleagh. These interests can shape your choice of a holiday rental in Bailieborough without requiring you to limit your stay to just one way of exploring.
