Cahir Castle makes the town’s distinctive character immediately apparent: the castle is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in Ireland and stands on a rocky island in the River Suir. Anyone interested in the development of Irish castles can watch a 15-minute audiovisual presentation at the Castle Cottage in Cahir Castle. The commentary is available in Irish, English, French, German and Italian.

Castle history and walking trails

Close to Cahir is the Swiss Cottage, an unusual property in the cottage orné style. Its story tells of an aristocratic young couple who commissioned its construction. The cottage served as a retreat for the residents of the nearby mansion and was used for picnics, small gatherings, and fishing and hunting parties. Access to the interior is available only as part of a guided tour; places are allocated in order of arrival. On the way inside, a hidden underground tunnel leads in; it was formerly used as a servants’ entrance.

For a walk, the Coronation Walk connects Cahir Castle with the Swiss Cottage: it starts at the castle and runs south through woodland to the cottage. The route is flat and gently graded, passing through native deciduous woodland planted in the 1790s. Another option is the Tipperary Heritage Way. Its 2 km section along the towpath beside the River Suir runs from Cahir Castle to the Swiss Cottage. You can therefore choose between a woodland trail and a riverside route without confusing the two.

Just outside the walls of Cahir Castle is Inch Field, a public park with wooden sculptures. It adds a dedicated outdoor art space to a visit to the castle. In Cahir itself, the ruins of Cahir Abbey, also called the Priory of St. Mary, are another reminder of the town’s religious history. Cahir Priory is a National Monument in the care of the Office of Public Works and is visited without a guided tour. The Blind Piper statue honours the uilleann piper Edward Keating Hyland.

Cycling tour and activities on the River Suir

Cahir To Cycle offers a guided cycling tour of historic Cahir in County Tipperary. It visits ancient sites, from a pre-Christian well to an Augustinian abbey, and includes St Paul's Church and the tomb monument of the Earl of Glengall and his family. The meeting point is Cahir railway station. After a cycling safety briefing, bicycles, helmets and high-visibility vests are provided. This is a way to explore the town’s history on a guided bicycle tour.

South of Cahir, Cahir Park offers a different focus: on the River Suir, there are opportunities to paddle a kayak or canoe, or use a stand-up paddleboard. The park also has walking and cycling trails. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether you mainly want to discover the castle, buildings and history in town, or also include trails and water activities south of Cahir. These interests give your search for a holiday rental in Cahir a clear direction, without needing to combine the different experiences into a single outing.
