Castletown-Bearhaven lies between the Caha Mountains and the Slieve Miskish Mountains; Bere Island protects the town from the Atlantic. The town may have Ireland’s most beautiful natural harbour. Harbour life and the landscape of the Beara Peninsula give a stay its own rhythm: you can explore the market square and waterfront promenade, or plan your days around longer cycling and walking routes. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider whether the town itself or the routes across the peninsula should be the main focus.

Harbour, waterfront and market

The harbour serves Castletownbere’s many fishing boats and is constantly busy during the fishing season. Visitors can watch the colourful boats on the deep blue water. A walk along the palm-lined waterfront promenade is another option in town. This lets you focus on the harbour and water without needing to plan a longer excursion.

A market is held regularly in the market square. It reaches its peak on the first Thursday of each month, with food and second-hand goods; in summer, traders also set up their stalls every Thursday. Market hours are 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. Check the date before your trip so your visit coincides with a market day. The Castletownbere tourist office is located on the Church of Ireland grounds and provides visitors with information. Check its opening days in advance.

Beara Way: cycling route and choice of stages

The Beara Way Cycling Route is a 138-kilometre national cycling route. It runs mostly along country roads, has no fixed start or end point, and can be joined in any town or village on the Beara Peninsula, including Castletownbere. The route connects the town with Adrigole, Allihies and Eyeries, then returns to Glengarriff. This means you can plan your trip around either a single stretch or the longer route.

One specific stage covers 16 kilometres from Adrigole to Castletownbere. The 16 kilometres and the total distance of 138 kilometres offer different scales for planning: a particular stage or a more extensive cycling tour. On a cycling stretch to Castletownbere, cyclists can follow the main road and enjoy views across Berehaven Harbour. Check current road and traffic conditions before setting out.

A four- to five-hour section of the Beara Way on the way to Castletownbere also offers a distinct perspective on the route. It passes several archaeological sites and a state forest, and climbs towards Knockgour. Archaeological features along the way include a cairn, a megalithic tomb, standing stones, a fulacht fia and a Mass Rock. The Beara Way on the way to Castletownbere also offers impressive views of Adrigole Harbour, Berehaven and Bere Island.

Castle ruins and connections to Bere Island

Dunboy Castle, also known as Caisleán Dhún Baoi, lies about two miles west of Castletownbere. The castle was a stronghold of O’Sullivan Bere, a Gaelic clan leader and “Chief of Dunboy”. It was built to protect and defend Berehaven Harbour and is now largely in ruins. If you plan to visit the ruins, check current access arrangements beforehand.

Ferries run from Castletownbere to West End on Bere Island, and from Pontoon to Rerrin Village, also on Bere Island. Pontoon lies about three miles towards Glengarriff, beside Berehaven Park Golf Course. Timetables and services may change; check the connection before your trip. Nearby is also Tralahan, about one kilometre from Castletownbere on the main road to Allihies. Toilets are available there; check the facilities before your visit.

Choosing the right focus for your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment, use your planned vacation days as a guide: will your stay focus mainly on the harbour, market square and waterfront promenade, or would you like to set aside more time for cycling and walking routes? The route offers different scales for planning: a 16-kilometre stage, the 138-kilometre full route and a four- to five-hour section. If you plan to include Bere Island, also take the ferry connection and its current timetable into account.
