Wicklow: Coast, History and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Wicklow
Wicklow combines coastal views with a rich and varied town history. In town, the Wicklow Town Heritage Trail winds through narrow streets and historic sites; at Black Castle, a ruin stands on a rocky headland above the sea. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Wicklow, you can choose between culture, harbour life and coastal excursions.
Town History on the Heritage Trail
The Wicklow Town Heritage Trail has 25 stops. They trace the town’s history—from the arrival of Saint Patrick in 432 to the founding of the Irish Free State in 1922. The themes span many centuries, giving the walk a clear historical focus. At the same time, the trail passes through narrow streets and lets visitors experience the beauty of the coast.
From Easter Saturday to the last Saturday in September, a free guided tour takes place every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. It starts outside the Wicklow Tourist Information Centre at Fitzwilliam Square. If you’d like to learn about the town’s history on a guided tour, you can include this regular event in your travel plans. If you’re visiting outside this period, the Heritage Trail remains an attraction in its own right, while the seasonal tour is limited to the Saturdays listed.
Castle and Prison History
Black Castle stands on a fortified, strategically situated rocky headland at the mouth of the Vartry River. A castle was later built there; today, its ruins are known as Black Castle. They lie on the eastern side of Wicklow Town and offer views of the town and the North Wicklow coast. Visitors can reach the ruins from South Quay or Castle Street. Its striking location and history make it a destination in its own right for anyone interested in culture.
The restored Wicklow Gaol also tells the story of a turbulent past: construction began in 1702, but the prison wasn’t completed until the 1840s. People were imprisoned there for breaking the Penal Laws; after the 1798 rebellion, many rebels were held there. The prison’s stories also include Billy Byrne and deportations to the penal colonies of Botany Bay and Van Diemen’s Land. Important for planning: Wicklow’s Historic Gaol is currently closed for renovation work. The Abbey Grounds offer a different historical connection, with ancient monastic ruins and significance for Wicklow Town. The site also hosts the Taste of Wicklow festival.
Harbour and Coastal Landscape
Visitors and locals can swim, row, fish, bathe and stroll at Wicklow Harbour throughout the year. The harbour is home to Wicklow Sailing Club, the RNLI Lifeboat Station and Conway Port. The activities listed range from relaxing by the water to getting active around the harbour. They may help you choose a destination if you’re looking for a holiday that includes water and coast.
Wicklow Head is 3 km from the town centre. Three modern lighthouses stand there, having guided ships on the Irish Sea. The Wicklow Head Cliff Walk is a popular destination for walkers, with views of Wicklow Town, the harbour and the coast. Rare birds nest along the route, and archaeological sites include a rock shelter where prehistoric flints were found. Seals can be spotted on beaches along the route. Glen Beach lies at the start of the cliff walk from Wicklow Town and offers coastal views, as well as views of the grey seals native to the area.
The Cliff Walk has some climbs and runs close to unprotected cliffs. Along these sections, walk in single file. Dogs must be kept on a lead and must not approach the seals. These guidelines are especially important if you’re exploring the coastal path with children or a dog.
More Trails and Places
The Captain Halpin’s Trail leads to places that were significant in the life of Captain Robert Halpin. It adds a biographical focus of its own to the town history covered by the Heritage Trail. Depending on whether you’re interested in local history, coastal scenery or activities on the water, these options can add different highlights to your stay.
More places to discover: Hollywood, Kiltegan, Aughrim, Shillelagh, Rathnew, Kilcoole, Donard and Greystones.
