Kilronan is the main harbour and village on Inis Mór. Most visitors first arrive on the island here. Kilronan is also home to most of Inis Mór’s shops, pubs, accommodation, restaurants and visitor services. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment on the island, you could consider staying here if these amenities and the harbour are important for your trip.

Harbour Village and Island History

Kilronan’s role as an arrival point shapes its importance to visitors. The Aran Heritage Centre (Ionad Arann) offers a cultural point of interest: it is an interactive museum about local history, language and ways of life. If you’re interested in life on Inis Mór, you’ll find topics here that go beyond finding your way around the harbour. The museum thus complements the impressions you get in the village from its pubs, restaurants and visitor services.

The Bar is also part of the village’s history: the pub is in Kilronan and is one of the oldest on Inis Mór. Killeany Kiln, a rare surviving lime kiln in the Aran Islands, is also near the village. It reflects the islands’ industrial and agricultural history. Kilronan’s surroundings thus bring together a local pub tradition and evidence of work that is part of the island’s history.

Irish Music and Local Cuisine

Joe Watty’s is a traditional Irish pub and restaurant in Kilronan that hosts Irish music events. During the summer season, it has live traditional Irish music seven nights a week.

Joe Watty’s also specialises in locally caught seafood, much of which is caught on the island. This gives the food a tangible connection to the island. Together with the village’s restaurants and pubs, it offers a range of options distinct from the walking and cycling opportunities, and may also factor into your decision to stay in Kilronan.

Getting Around on Foot or by Bike

If you’d like to go for a walk, Kilronan has two named starting points. The Ring of Aran begins in the village and is considered a three- to six-hour walk. The South of the Island Walk also starts in Kilronan, the main village. The two names refer to different walking routes; no connection between them is implied. You can factor the stated duration of the Ring of Aran into your day’s plans.

You can hire bicycles from Aran Bike Hire at Kilronan Pier. Options include e-bikes, city bikes, tandems, bikes with a towing attachment, trailers and children’s bikes. This range gives you different types of bicycles to choose from, while the two walking routes offer their own options on foot. Which activity you’d like to include in your stay can therefore be one factor when planning around Kilronan.
