Inishbofin combines a rugged coastline with distinctive natural areas and a layered history. Three official loop walks offer different perspectives on the island: the Westquarter Loop takes in cliffs, caves and the ruins of a promontory fort; the Cloonamore Loop passes a sandy beach and the ruins of St Colman’s Church. Lagoons, seals and traces of the past also offer reasons to tailor your trip to your interests.

Coastal Landscape and Protected Nature

The Inishbofin and Inishshark protected area is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Its protected features include coastal lagoons, oligotrophic waters with very few minerals on sandy plains, North Atlantic wet heaths and European dry heaths. Grey seals are also among the protected features. Lough Bofin is considered an excellent example of an isolated sedimentary lagoon with a shingle barrier—a landform that differs from the open coastal stretches.

The protected area is home to a breeding colony of grey seals; the grey seal is listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive. If you are interested in the animals, you could consider a charter boat trip: these trips offer the opportunity to observe seal colonies. There are also opportunities to snorkel on the water, as Inishbofin’s Blueways offer such experiences.

Two Loop Walks, Different Experiences

The Westquarter Loop follows the rugged coastline. Its notable landmarks include a stony beach, sea blowholes and caves, high cliffs and the ruins of the promontory fort Dún Mór. Those interested in coastal landforms and historic remains will find both along this route. The Cloonamore Loop offers a different experience: one section runs along a sandy beach, and the walk also passes the ruins of St Colman’s Church. When choosing your outings, you can therefore opt for a coastline shaped more by rocks or a route featuring a sandy beach and church ruins.

There are three official loop walks on Inishbofin in total. The two loops described here offer practical pointers for planning your day; the other routes are part of the official offering, but no information about their length or difficulty is provided.

Discover the History

Cromwell’s Barracks is a star-shaped artillery fort built around 1656. It later served as a prison for captured Catholic clergy. Its changing uses make the fort a striking testament to the island’s history. The Inishbofin Heritage Museum offers another way to explore the past. Established in 1998 in the building known as “the store” at the old pier, it displays furnishings from traditional island homes and tools used in fishing, farming and crafts. It also features more than 200 photographs of local people.

The original monastic site of St Colman is also among the island’s historic places: it dates from the 14th century. The ruins of a stone chapel now stand on the site. An official loop walk also passes through historic landscapes dating from the Iron and Bronze Ages. The guided walks run by Inishbofin Walking Tours are led by a local historian and archaeologist.

Beaches, Music and Local Food

Two beaches on Inishbofin have received the Green Coast Award and are suitable for sea swimming and relaxation. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on walking, time at the beach, wildlife watching or culture. Music sessions bring together many local and visiting musicians. Bia Bo Finne is a food festival on Inishbofin, held on the first weekend in October.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Inishbofin, these interests can help guide your choice of destination: coastal walks, nature and culture each offer a different focus for your stay.
