Nagygörbő: Basalt Corridor, Hiking and Local History

Nagygörbő brings together the basalt rock corridor, the Vadlán-lik cave and local customs. Basalt Corridor and Local History

Sziklafolyosó and Vadlán-lik are among Nagygörbő’s tourist attractions. Vadlán-lik lies at the end of the corridor between the basalt cliffs. The village coat of arms also reflects this landscape feature: the cliffs depicted in it represent the basalt rock corridor within the municipality.

Vadlán-lik formed at the same time as the basalt road. The cave was last used during the German occupation and Arrow Cross period; later, during the system of compulsory deliveries under Mátyás Rákosi, farmers from the surrounding area hid their produce there. Thus, alongside its geological origins, the history of how the cave was used is also part of local tradition.

Local history offers several points of interest: the Nagygörbői Helytörténeti Múzeum is among Nagygörbő’s local heritage assets. “Nagygörbő Múltunk képekben” and “Nagygörbő Falutörténet” are also among them. A video about the exhibition “Nagygörbő Múltunk nélkül nincs jövő” is dated 26 June 2021.

Hike to Vadlán-lik

The recommended 7-km route leads on foot from the park of the Tolnay Kúria to the local attraction. White trail markers with a yellow stripe down the middle mark the way. The first two-thirds of the route are steep, with significant elevation changes over short stretches; the final third passes through wooded, rocky terrain.

The surface also varies along the route: two-thirds are on a paved road, after which it continues on a gravel road. The distance, gradient and changing surface provide practical information for planning your day. Benches and tables are available near the entrance to Vadlán-lik. Check local trail conditions before setting out and confirm what facilities are currently available before your visit.

A Shared Tradition

At the Tollfosztó, young and old in Nagygörbő come together every year to revive and preserve a cheerful tradition. Alongside its basalt cliffs and historical connections, the village is also defined by this recurring community custom.

The Zalai Borvidék stretches across the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság and the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység; it comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements.
