Vasboldogasszony: Church and Lavender in June
Accommodation in Vasboldogasszony
Vasboldogasszony combines a long church history with a seasonal lavender theme. The church was first mentioned in 1409; its construction is dated stylistically to the second half of the 13th century. In June, 2,000 lavender plants from Tihany bloom in the garden known as the Boldogasszony Lavender Garden. A historic building and an annual bloom thus stand side by side as distinct highlights.
The Church Through the Ages
The recorded dates trace the church’s changing condition. In 1698, only its walls and tower remained; the bell was housed in a wooden bell frame. The church was restored around 1700. A wooden choir and pulpit are documented for 1754. The present-day altar was already there, and the church still had a south portal. In 1779, it was described as dilapidated; at that time, its tower was partly stone and partly wood. Historically, the church was surrounded by a cemetery.
The architecture also brings together a variety of details. The semicircular choir and façade tower date from the Middle Ages. Outside, the tower rests on a corbel; inside, it is supported by half-pillars. The east-facing choir contains a double pointed-arch sedilia and a sacrament niche. Behind the altar is a bricked-up slit window; traces of fire can be seen everywhere beneath the Baroque plaster. These details offer a layered picture of the church without reducing its building history to a single feature.
The altar is carved from linden wood. Its relief, set in an elaborately gilded frame, depicts the Assumption of Mary with Mary and angels. Together with the sacrament niche and sedilia, this artwork adds a specific visual motif to the church’s architectural features. The details range from the medieval choir and tower to descriptions of the church’s condition in the 18th century.
Lavender in Bloom and When to Visit
The Boldogasszony Lavender Garden offers a clear seasonal highlight: 2,000 lavender plants from Tihany bloom there every June. June is therefore the ideal reference point for planning your visit if the lavender garden is among your interests. The recurring bloom is quite different from the church’s long historical arc: here, one particular month matters; there, a building history reaches back to the Middle Ages.
If you are looking for holiday accommodation in Vasboldogasszony, these two themes can shape your travel-date considerations. The June bloom offers a seasonal guide, while the church’s history provides a cultural and historical focus spanning several centuries. This makes it possible to choose when to stay according to the aspects of the trip that matter most to you.
