Church and castle: history in several building phases
An important Roman road ran through the area of Rábahídvég. The Roman Catholic church in Rábahídvég, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was already standing in 1342. At the end of the 16th century, it passed into Protestant hands during the Reformation; in 1674, Catholics reclaimed it during the Counter-Reformation. These changes in ownership give the church a denominational history spanning several centuries.
The church acquired its present Baroque form after several renovations and extensions in the 18th century. István Dorfmeister painted the altarpieces for the two side altars in 1773; today, only copies of the paintings can be seen. The building therefore brings together different historical layers: the church was already standing in the Middle Ages, underwent denominational changes and later acquired its Baroque appearance.
The Seebach family castle provides a different architectural accent: it was built in the first half of the 19th century in the Classical style with Baroque elements and currently houses a school. Compared with the church’s Baroque form, it reveals two different building histories and distinct combinations of architectural styles.
Nature trail, crafts and water activities
A nature trail with explanatory signs runs through the 16-hectare Csodaszarvas Landscape Park in Rábahídvég. The park also has a forest playground, a trampoline, a willow-basket carousel and traditional games. Check the current availability of the activities before visiting.
Old crafts are taught at the craft courtyard in Csodaszarvas Landscape Park, whose operation is supported by an association. If you are planning to visit for this cultural focus, check in advance what visitor options are currently available.
Paddlers on the Rába Water Tour have two landing points in Rábahídvég: by the bridge in the village centre, or a few hundred metres earlier, at Csodaszarvas Landscape Park. Check local conditions before setting off.
Vas County: landscapes, routes and museums
Within the wider Vas County destination, Írottkő Nature Park lies in the northwestern part of Vas County. It includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. The Termál Kerékpáros Túra (Thermal Cycling Tour) combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other thermal baths, and passes five thermal bath complexes in Vas County. Another route option is the Vulkán Tour, which leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy and Belső-hegy.
Museums in the wider Vas County destination also have their own cultural focus. The Vasi Skanzen presents rural life and the folk architecture of Vas County over the past two centuries. The Nádasdy Ferenc Museum features an exhibition on the history of the hussars, described as unique in Hungary. The museum also displays art and cultural history objects from the castles and palaces of Vas County.
